absolutely c:

it's a really handy method that i learned from one of my professors when we were working with oil paints. first, of course, you want to sketch it out--there are a bunch of different methods for that, you could trace it or copy it by eye; i kind of toggled back and forth between the ref and the sketch, comparing proportions and contours and such.

next comes the base layer. you want to choose something somewhat neutral, like a brown or a gray--in a warmer piece, you might want to go for maroon or orange-brown, while in a cooler piece, something like gray-blue or even dark green would work. i like to set the brush at about 50% opacity for this bit. you can play around with saturation--i think dean's had the least saturated base layers, while cas's had the most.

the next layer on top of that will be the complimentary opposite of the base layer--for instance, if you picked orange-brown, dark blue would be good for this layer. i generally turn the opacity up on this layer and lay it down heavy. make the dark sections darker and leave the light sections light.

after that i just kind of go crazy with colors. probably one of the most valuable things i learned in high school was that you can use mixtures of the primary and secondary colors to create the color you're looking for--but in a far more interesting way. the trick is to keep the opacity around 60-70% at the most, follow your instincts, and keep an eye on your ref. in my speedpaint of dean, for instance, i used a lot of yellows where the brightest light outlined his face and mellow blues for where a softer, less intrusive light source captured him from the side. the edges of most of the shadows were tinged red.

keep the variations in mind, too--with sam's, it wasn't just all one tone for his skin; there were places where it was redder, like around his eyes and nose, and a little cooler under his jaw and such where there were strong shadows. his jacket, too, had many variations of blues and yellows, depending on the light source.

as a last touch-up, you may want to outline some of the darker bits in black (or a color close to black, like a very dark purple or blue) and go over the highlights with your eraser.

This is seriously awesome and I copy and pasted the text, so I can go back to it and try out the technique this weekend. You see, sketches are fine with me, but the moment I add color things get wonky. This is going to be so much help.

did you try anything different with your painting of purgatory!cas? i'm curious because it seems to have more of a painting's quality about it and there's a really nice softness to it, though you've still managed to keep the details clear. it's my favorite one i think c:

well the only thing i changed with purgatory cas was my mixing of the the colors since he had pinks and and cream colors involving more than usual so i was more careful with it and i tweaked with my brushes a little so it gave me a smoother way to work i guess
