Here's a story:
I was reading a very lovely story that a very lovely soul wrote as a gift for me when life was (not so lovely, but) always very lovely when they were around.
And I missed them. But I hadn't spoken to that kind friend in forever. And my heart hurt the way hearts do when you pull them in a way that the tape you placed over the little holes gives and your love leaks out little by little.
So I went back and I took a look at our conversations (which were always very lovely).
It was a cozy trip and I'd like to think the path was made of river stone and on either side there were flowers of all kinds and the day was nice; so nice it almost felt like it wasn't summer. And when I got to the end I found a conversation between me and this pretty young thing and we traded hearts like it was as easy as trading words and it left me with that awe that nostalgia tends to give way to.
And at the end of that conversation I told this this very lovely soul, this kind friend, this pretty young thing, that I would write them a billion stories and asked them when their birthday was. And they said July 10th. And I laughed, because that was a silly thing to come across two days late. Then I realized I only ever wrote them one poem, and I had missed many of their birthdays since, but this lovely little heart-wrencher had given me a million happy memories.
So I thought the least I could do was say Thank You and wish them happiness on their birthday (even though I missed it) and happiness every other day except on days when they needed something else and then twice as much happiness on the days that followed.
Happy belated Birthday, Ko.
I hope you are doing well.
(Also, somewhere in the middle of writing this I accidentally clicked unwatch?? and I'm going to click watch again and we're both going to pretend we didn't see that so I don't have to feel ridiculously clumsy with a keyboard???)
