Thank you for including my Atlantis maps among your favorites. It's particularly pleasing to get that kind of acclamation from such an accomplished cartographer. That's quite a gallery!

Well, I have already submitted and they have already been posted on your site, however there are 3 or 4 of them I have updated and edited into finer detail. Can I replace my older versions with the links to the new versions of the same art?I really don't want to clog the site with basically the same two art pieces.
thanks for the welcome

Well first of all, all these city maps are actually 9 sheets of graph paper connected to create one large piece, something like 33 inches by 28 inches i think. I would take a picture of them and then transfer the picture onto my lap top. I always have to edit them because the flash of the camera causes a glare on the photo and needs to be recolored and filled in with that missing area.
the city maps i edit with paint on windows too. first i outline all the streets and then outline the buildings in black, the use greens to recreate the vegitation for that area, then i would use the polygon shape with the outline being black and the fill being what ever the original building was colored and draw them over the newly colored terrain....its a LONG process, but i go faster after finding little tricks and shortcuts to making the maps
hope that helped a bit...:S

Greetings nsam85, and welcome to the OPaaT Project! To get you started with a star system I'll need you to give me a name for your planet. The planet can be a terrestrial world, or it could be a lifeless gas giant or ice planet. Just let me know what sounds good to you.
Thanks again!

It is a terrestrial planet by the name of Sephtre Rosa, meaning the ruling rose. My planet is already made [link]
Everything involving my world must first be approved by myself, as I have already named everything and drawn out all the cities and countries within this world

I understand. In about 7 years from now OPaaT will have planets of that size. Perhaps you could jump back in when that time comes.
Best wishes,

nsam85 In reply to scarsofcarma [2012-09-30 04:31:27 +0000 UTC]
I'm not really sure.. I've drawn cities since my first year in high school in 2000. There was no purpose for them, I just enjoyed making them. I didn't start drawing these particular cities until 2005. Now that I have drawn them I have devised a story that features a character that goes on a quest to retrieve something that is buried under these cities that will open the door to communications with each cities original place of origins on different continents in the world the people live on. Shortly after the ancestors first arrived on this continent, traveling back to their old home across the ocean was no longer travelable due to the giant whirlpool that formed in the middle of the only shipping route to the continents, forever isolating everyone on this continent.

Hi - I wonder if you've seen Jerry Gretzinger's growing, evolving maps? Your work, and your post here, reminded me of the way he started (and continues) to create his fictional world. Here's a video [link] and a link to his blog [link] with some fascinating images, if you haven't seen his project already.

hmmm interesting, I can see where it reminds you of my work...I do very VERY similar things with my maps, except my maps all take place before electricity and are based on the golden age of ancient Rome. I also don't have a deck of cards to wipe out some portions of my cities....I couldn't do that, I spent to much time working on it. I do like the fact this his map is so large though. My maps are of cities that are far away from each other with open country with little to absolutely no habitation in between each city. For me it would be to boring to draw and color the space between because its just country and no architecture.

well when making satellite maps of physical lands i go to google, and type in satellite images of mountains, plains, forests, wetlands, etc. i would click on the image and save image as. later i would use paint program from windows to open my original land map, then paste the corresponding satellite image to recreate the terrain im looking for....the city maps i edit with paint on windows too. first i outline all the streets and then outline the buildings in black, the use greens to recreate the vegitation for that area, then i would use the polygon shape with the outline being black and the fill being what ever the original building was colored and draw them over the newly colored terrain....its a LONG process, but i go faster after finding little tricks and shortcuts to making the maps

Oh, sure thing.
I'm a huge fan of cartography, but a terrible artist.
It's something I grew to love over time from playing all those RPGs. After all, a detailed world is important, and a map helps you make better sense of just what is going on.

I didn't really have any ideas in mind while I was making all my maps, just something I did for fun. Since I started posting them online, I have had several people tell me to become a RPG designer.....
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Murmansk In reply to nsam85 [2012-08-20 01:27:57 +0000 UTC]
Hah! Yeah right! Don't become an RPG designer. That title is too vague. You'd get lost in trying to do coding when your greatest strength that I have seen is cartography.
Well, really what I should say is. Don't do it unless you have a strong passion for it. If that's the case then go for it. I mean, making video games is an enormous project to undertake. You need Story, Visuals, Audio, objectives, controls, scripted encounters, gameplay that's both challenging but not frustrating and to top it all off. It has to be fun!
That's a lot to bite off when you're far better off finding someone who can put your best skills to use. You get to further your already existing skills and possibly making a good amount of money to the side. While smaller and more independent projects exists, they usually don't pay very well and are pretty high risk investments overall. (Considering you get less for what will likely be the same amount of work.)
Of course if you want to undertake a huge project simply out of passion then, as I previously said, "Go for it."

Wow,I LOVE your stuff, and obviously you love cartography
I'm suddenly torn between the artistic detail of the hand drawn maps, and the photorealism of the sattellite images... How did you get that effect on the maps like [link] ?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
nsam85 In reply to whitetower-exe [2012-07-06 15:05:34 +0000 UTC]
I just went to google.com searching the images section and typed in ....satellite images of mountains, lakes, forests, plains deserts, and regions containing ice, Antarctica Greenland etc. Then i would just save image as.....After that I would just go to my original continents drawn with colored pencils, markers and pen, and edit in Paint. I would the do paste from...and i would choose a image onto a blank area of the drawing and start by cutting certain parts of the images and drag them onto the same terrain feature I was trying to create....long and tedious but worth it in the end.
