Chris has no soul- it was devoured by none other than Ashbe, seeing as he failed to defeat the demon. The family tradition was that you had to fight and defeat a demon at a set age (common ages were 10-13) in order to keep your soul. If you failed, your soul would be turned over to the demon whom would them devour it, giving you a set age to live to. Thought Chris has no soul, it does not mean he is heartless- it just means that he is easier to physically, mentally and emotionally harm, despite his strength.

Chris comes from a family of shapeshifters - most commonly carnivores/mythical creatures are found in the family. he can shift into a panther. Not only that, but with the creature you are given, you inherite the teeth, explaining his rather sharp chompers.
