Hey, i just wanted to stop by and say that i absolutely LOVED the Heart Collector.

that was a truly moving piece and i think you are a genius (for a lack of a better term )

i was wondering, could you look at some animations i've done, and maybe tell me what you think of them?
i'm in my first year of art school and i know i have a lot to learn, but i was just wondering if you could give me a little heads up before i start working towards my major next year.

Hi thelastmagician,

Thank you for the complements.

When I clicked on the links in your post I received the following message:
"The URL contained a malformed video ID."

I'd be happy to look at your work, when you are able to re-upload your videos.

Hi Gest0ert,

Unfortunately, I do not own the rights for the music in In the Silence, and so I can't post it here.

Stay tuned though, I will have a brand new Hatchiman film up here soon.

Hi P-O-R-K-Y,

Animation college sounds exciting!

I think that it's important to keep an open mind and ask a lot of questions. Ask your teachers and peers anything that comes to mind and don't ever hold back or be embarrassed.

Demand and accept all critic, you don't have to follow it, but anything that can improve your work can be valid at some point.

It seems like you already have a lot of passion and that is key for personal success. Never give up and remember that as long as you are making something, you are also improving by default. I can speak from my own 10 years of experience, if you look at my youtube channel , you'll see just how primitive my early films were. But at the time I thought they were awesome! (oh my hubris ).

Also, it is important for an artist to be exposed to as many works of art as possible. There is a danger in most animation schools, where the program only exposes the student to commercial and classical animation art and completely dismisses everything else. Or, only exposes the student to abstract and experimental. Both have validation and being aware of different styles will open you up to possibilities. So try not to fall into the standard Disney/anime/Burton/John K. aesthetic. Copy every image that you find fascinating, you will see how you get better that way.

To summarize, from your work it's clear you have the touch, the passion and the work ethic. Don't lose that, open your mind up to different styles (fine art, expressionist paintings, abstract-installation, etc.), ask a lot of questions, and if nothing more, you will be a very interesting artist.

GOOD LUCK!

I hope u dont mind, i have one more question. I was just looking at your website, and u seem to very talented when it comes to drawing the human figure. Is that something I will be taught in college? Or is there any ways that could make me better that I could try in my spare time? I wouldnt say that I dont know how to draw figures, its just that, its not my strongest point and I would love to use some made up characters in up coming animations ive been working on, but need more practice. Should I work on my own style?

Sup P-O-R-K-Y,

Human anatomy was a hard thing for me to learn and still something that I haven't mastered. Check out my friend Erykh 's, page... when it comes to anatomy, he's da boss.

In my experience, there are two ways to get good at drawing the human figure.

The first, is to take life drawing classes. Now most animation schools provide these classes, but it really depends on the teacher whether the class is good or not.

Teachers tend to fall into two schools of teaching; those who will teach you to draw what you see, and those who will teach you to understand what you draw by breaking down and simplifying the image. The latter is very important for 2d animation, but it hinders your ability to see the subject as it is. So finding the balance between the two is critical.

If you cannot find a good life or figure drawing class, take a sketchbook and have someone pose for you. Draw everything at any chance you get.

DON'T STYLIZE! I can't emphasize that too much. Style is something that has to develop naturally,if you are consciously stylizing when you are figure drawing, you are basically substituting what is in front of you with what it is in your mind. This will prevent you from training your eye and hand connection and will only re-enforce the perceptions of your brain. As the old Buddhist saying goes: "The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon". You want to draw the moon.

The second way to learn anatomy was taught to me by my wonderful teacher Adam Rogers . Who would take muscle and bone illustrations from medical books and copy them over and over. He said that it's the equivalent of memorizing the notes to a song. By doing this, you will learn where all the muscles are placed and you will be able to understand what you see and what you draw.

Don't get discouraged if you are finding a certain part the process tough. In my class we used to say; 'you are either having a good life drawing day, or learning life drawing day'.

Draw what you see, understand what you draw, don't stylize and you will find this practice to be quite fulfilling.
