Sorry to butt in, but I know of at least one. His name is Taiyō Matsumoto - he drew Tekkonkinkreet and several other series. His art is pretty surrealistic, and it's definitely not your run-of-the-mill manga style.

(Though one could argue that there is no such thing as a definite "typical" manga style, but I digress.)

Also, check out the works of Yuusuke Nakamura. He made the cover art for most of Asian Kung-Fu Generation's albums.
