You're very welcome! I'd love to see you make some new tutorials.
I've been searching all through the internet about different ways to make a marionette with an opening mouth.

I'm hoping to be able to create a life like dog marionette with the ability to open it's mouth and hold a ball or so~

Can't add sketches to notes.  Who knew?

This should explain things better.

Wow that's so nice of you! This is actually really helpful!
I haven't gotten to test a marionette with a mouth opening mechanism, so as I was thinking it through I wondered if just a string is fine or will the spring cause for the whole head to move upwards? I should have a more rigid pipe going to the top of the head to give opposing push to the spring for opening the jaw or something?

bvanhorn In reply to luyfsa [2016-02-19 18:59:02 +0000 UTC]

I didn't use a really powerful spring.  I experimented with 10 or 20 until  I found one that would close the jaw and not influence the head movement.  That is one of the advantages of using bass wood (aka linden, limewood).  It is light but really tough.

I made the main head in two pieces which I glued together with a layer of newspaper between them with alignment dowels.  Once everything was carved, I was able to split the head open and rig the mechanism.  I then epoxied it back together and did the final sanding/shaping.

I used brass tubing found at any Hobby/Craft store and I used fine piano wire that I bent after heating it up red hot for the actuator rod.

Glad I could be helpful.  Feel free to ask questions, I don't mind.  Wooden marionette making is a dying art and I'd like to keep it alive for a little bit longer.

Good luck.

Thank you so much!

I have done some wood crafting before and would surely love to try creating some marionettes next time I get the chance!
For now I'll try working with some other materials recycled and yarns. I've always loved marionettes and had several as a child, but as time passed by I had to give them up. Only now I'm trying to get back into it in my own style and hopefully learn the basics of creating marionettes myself!

Wish you all the luck! If I actually manage to create something decent I might try to put a picture up over DA. Maybe share it with you as well!

For a soft marionette I could imagine a cardboard base with a really loose spring or maybe an elastic band might do the trick to at least try out the idea~ (I'm quite low in material options at this time)

There is a pretty good book on making cloth marionettes called "The Complete Book of Marionettes" by Mabel Beaton.  It is available from Amazon.  She also uses plastic wood in Plaster of Paris molds (which works pretty good).

It isn't all encompassing, but it does give a pretty good idea of what is necessary for making marionettes.  Plus it has patterns.

I'll draw up what I did for the Wyrm Marionette and note you.  It is actually pretty simple to  make a marionette (especially a dog) open it's mouth.

The ball will be a bit different.  Most of the marionette theaters in the past used trickery when it came to objects that the puppets interacted with.  The easiest way for a dog puppet to carry a ball in it's mouth is to attach a string to the ball and run it through the mouth in head of the dog.  When you bend the dog's head down over the ball, you need to pull the string attached to the ball so it is being held inside the mouth.

I'll draw that mechanism also.  It is easier to see when you see a diagram.

Just note me what's in your mind and we can discuss it ^^
