Do you think you can help me? I am working on a picture for my robotics team, and I have a layer that has depth, and I want the layer i'm placing over it to match the depth. What tool(s) should I use to do this, and if possible can you make a tutorial?

Just looking at it, it looks like it is 3D, as in you can see where it is supposed to be raised and suppressed (just like any picture I guess) I just want the overlay to mesh with that, and not look like a transparent sheet laying in front of the background image. Should I send you the image to make this easier to understand?

I want the layer called XANA look like it is part of the layer GEAR and have the numbers visible

kingaby In reply to Foxtrek64 [2012-01-12 11:32:23 +0000 UTC]
ok. there are only 5 layers there, 9, 7, 3, pasted layer, blank vault.
No XANA, no GEAR.
I assume you want the red symbol to look like part of the gear layer.
Select the red layer, then push CTRL+e to merge the layer down? If I am understanding the problem correctly

The file must have not pasted correctly. The red symbol is "XANA" and the "blank vault" layer is "GEAR". The effect I'm looking for specifically is I want the red symbol to look like it was painted on to the gear. (blood?) The gear looks like it has places where it is higher than other parts, as it should (because it is taken from the texture of a 3D model). Is there any way to do this, and if so, how?

oh, ok i soft of understand. you want it to look painted on, you you need it to match the vault texture?
the best way would be to play around with layer modes. Colour is the best one.
For a more advance and better looking solution, use the magic wand tool to select the symbol. then turn visibility OFF on the symbol layer.
next, duplicate the vault layer and set the new layer mode to "colour"
finally, go Image > Adjustments > Gradient Map
select a bright red going to bright orange gradient; enjoy.

i just found you through YouTube, it's a shame you're such an obscure artist. you do really great work. are you currently a student or do you work for S2 or what?
just a friendly peer saying hi, really.

shot you a friend request on YouTube, i'm going to start uploading process videos as well, whenever i get around to not sucking at art. also, seriously, how are you NOT working for S2? you're better than their current concept artist.

the one and only, i'm still working on padding my skillset, but then again we're all forever bound to that eternal labor aren't we? i look forward to watching you break into the industry. i've seen a lot of my friends go pro in my time on DeviantArt and i plan to follow in their footsteps. you've easily got the ability; by now i can recognize it.
