Post anything you enjoy, which is of interest to you.  Always create art though because it is fun for YOU. Not to impress others. - And when they later are impressed, that, will just be an added bonus. 

This site does take some getting used to; especially navigating it, and trying to keep up with the feedback (which, the longer you are here and the more watchers you gain - is going to be ENORMOUS.  But all worth it to me (although keeping up is literally impossible, so don't even try.  Just take things at your own pace. We all come to the same conclusion eventually; otherwise, you'd be answering notes/comments all day and never get to enjoy the art. So don't let it stress you out -  and it will before long. Just remember my words when that day comes, and that I know for a fact that everyone here understands and feels the same way.

A good way of making friends and finding art you like, I found, is to look at the comments on people's artwork; you can then check out some of those people's profiles,  watch them,etc.  Also browsing any of their journals which are art features. You can find some fantastic, mind blowingly talented artists!!

Try not to have expectations of people. Like getting upset if they don't answer you back quickly enough (or at all) Some of us have so many watchers and favs, daily, like in the thousands; that they can't give individual attention. Even though they want to. Just keep in mind that the majority of the time, it's not personal. (you'll get the occasion self centered individual, whom thinks they should be supported but don't support in return... But you will be able to tell them apart soon enough,... whom is overwhelmed, from whom is just here for them self.

We also have DD's each day (stands for Daily Deviation) In which the site chooses a certain number of artists each day, to feature their work. It's an honor, and really nice as it appears on the front page, and brings the artist to the attention of the community at large; rather than only to their watchers; equals a lot more exposure for the artists.  It's a nice little thing they do. And anyone can suggest a Daily Deviation.  If you are interested, just check out my profile, under the donation widget, where I have links, and it explains what it's all about.  Also while there learn about the DDSuggestionDrive (which is going on now in fact, through the end of the month; in which the staff challenges people to send them as many suggestions as possible; you can win stuff through this drive.  There are simple rules to ensure your notes get to them properly.  So if you think you'd be interested in something like this, read more about it also on my profile page just under the first explanation about the DD's. Give the group a visit; learn, and have fun!

I've been a member here 4 years in November. I've met so many wonderful, - and Caring friends!! Quite unexpectedly too, which made it even nicer.   We really are a close little community; and it's especially nice in that we get to make friends with, and converse with, people from all over the world. Learning about one another, our different cultures, etc.   It's amazing how you will come to care deeply about these people.  It can be hard though too for the same reason; such as the case where one of our members was killed most recently in Turkey, at the hand of terrorists; he and many others... 
But like with real life, don't let the bad deter you from broadening your horizon, and opening your heart.  It's better to care, if even for a while, than to never have those connections at all.

...Sorry for the novel! LOL  I'm such a wind bag at times,...once I get to blathering.
