I am an art therapist turned scenic artist. I paint theatre/ film sets and read books about psychoanalysis on my lunch break. Keeps me sharp. On my toes. Mrow.Most of what I post here are little things I do for fun, just to keep those fine art skills tuned to perfection while I'm faced with 40 hours a week of painting solid colors, distressing, texturing, wood graining, and climbing up scaffolding and then humiliating myself when I can't climb down.

Truth be told, few of us know what we're doing when we first start. Art making is a journey- and you collect the tools and know-how as you go along.

This journey is like walking a steep, rocky path into fog. I don't know where I'm going and the footing is dangerous. I'd rather turn back to where I know it's safe, but I know that the peak of the mountain is something to behold. That makes sense, right?

Makes sense. But what sets you apart from everyone else is perseverance and not being afraid to continue on, no matter how foggy it might get. Here's one of my favorite quotes by Charles Bukowski that got me through a lot of self-doubt:
"If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is."

Many thanks. I haven't worked with oils for years as they require a certain amount of maintenance and ventilation. Acrylics, while not as malleable, have been an alternative.
