Aw, thanks If that's the case I highly recommend Rad Sechrist's Storyboarding for Feature Animation class [link] .
And there's also Sherm Cohen's Storyboard Secrets course [link] .
Even if you don't end up taking Rad's classes or getting Sherm's excellent videos, there's still a wealth of information on there blogs. Check them out!

I am actually registered for Rad's April term for that class! I just finished up his Figure Invention class last Tuesday, so I'm really pumped to jump headfirst into story now! And cool, thanks for that link! I'm already learning a lot by going through the blog posts, and his videos look like a neat resource.
I totally will! And I look forward to seeing your future boards; I learn so much just by studying other's works.

How do you draw like this? I try but my drawings always comes out horrible! Do you think you could help?

gladyfaith In reply to cosplayerkenna [2012-06-22 06:26:33 +0000 UTC]
First as a disclaimer: I actually consider myself only okay at drawing and needing to improve a lot(you don't get to see all my bad drawings haha), so I don't consider myself an authority. That said
I practice A LOT. I breathe practice. I make it a daily ritual even if I'm really busy. Believe it or not, I try to do as much figure drawing from a real model as I can. I also draw at least a page of my hand in different positions every day, preferably much more. Something I swear by is going out and doing observational gesture sketches of people sitting down, playing, talking, everything-- all this to get used to expressing life in a gestural manner. I love movement so I really try to focus on capturing gesture. If my drawing is stiff I usually headdesk and try again. Studying a book or images on human muscle anatomy and bone proportion is very important (but I'm still learning). But imo, learning gesture is 1000x more important because you can have impeccable anatomy, but have a dead drawing. This is a good website to learn how to quickly draw gesture! 30seconds per pic! [link] I know it's hard to draw a pic in 30 sec, but you want to capture GESTURE, so the details and perfect anatomy take a backseat when studying from this site.
You might not like my answer, but all my study helps inform my anime art. >_< My stylized art improved once I started learning how to really -draw-. To study anime specifically, find some artists you like and study how they draw. There's some Japanese animators I adore for their fluid representation of movement that I want to capture. But it's really important to not copy their drawings (because you won't effectively learn that way; you'll just create a cheap imitation), but STUDY the way they draw. Are their lines soft? fluid? bursting with energy? sharp? focuses on shading over line? Think about what attracts you to that style-- REALLY think about it. If you can pinpoint what you like about the way they draw, that's a huge step and can help inform your art.
Just remember to have fun when you draw! And draw A LOT! My drawings aren't usually good the first time. I always try different poses via sketches! Some of them are REALLY bad. So I try again! My Dragon Kid pic went through 3 different pose drafts because the fist two were awful. So remember that to get to the good drawings, you need to draw the bad ones out of your system!
Wow this got LONG haha sorry. If you have any specific questions, I can answer. Or I can give you more general advice haha. But I'm sure I've talked your ear off enough. x'D

Don't worry! A long reply is what I wanted!
I have some questions:
Do you ever use tutorials to perfect the hair or the eyes when you draw someone from a show?
I stink at drawing hair, how did you learn to make the hair look good?
Other than the website that you put in the reply, are there any websites you use?
Are there any books you would suggest?
This one isn't about drawing, but would you ever cosplay at a convention?
Thank you!

gladyfaith In reply to cosplayerkenna [2012-06-22 16:39:37 +0000 UTC]
Ok haha. x'D Glad that's what you wanted!
(Sorry ahead of time for any typos! Kinda tired atm;; )
When I was younger and a beginner, yes, I did look at tutorials for that. :3 A lot of them were from here on deviantart and some were from old how to draw books. I think they're good to study. I didn't use them for any of the drawings I posted online, though. What I did was read through the tutorials and tried to do what they were doing in the exercise. Hopefully afterwards I'd be able to apply what I learned to what I drew afterwards.
I actually still find hair very difficult! I see other artists make hair very flowy and alive, which I still have trouble with. OTL At the moment, what helps me is to not think of the hair as little strands; think of them as clumps! When you think of hair as a mass laying on the head, it simplifies it a lot. I also consider movement and gravity when deciding how to draw the hair clumps. Look in the mirror and see how your hair falls. A good exercise to get better at hair is to look at real hair and try draw it while keeping the clump idea in mind. Of course, you are allowed to have single strands flying about in addition to the solidified clumps. Also, try to vary the widths of the clumps. Variety creates interest!
Even hair has gesture! When drawing hair, I think using swooping lines is good. It looks better than if you draw a bunch of tiny lines to make one line. For example, in my Pokemon BW2 pic, I drew each line in the girl's pigtails in one big swoop with the swish of my arm. For me, this approach is important because it gives life and personality to the hair I draw (at least I hope it does!? lol). Oh, and just in case-- a beginner mistake that I notice is that some people draw the hair without considering that it -sits- on the skull. Make to lift the hair so it looks like its sitting on top of the head. OH. And make sure you have the guideline of the head down before you draw the hair. Otherwise you risk making more mistakes without a base to attach it to first.
For basic stuff, all Andrew Loomis books are great! His instructional books are quite famous. A book I got that had great, forceful drawings to learn from was Michael D. Mattesi's "Force". This is more advanced, but this book is GREAT for learning -structural- anatomy: [link] I think more than anything, learning anatomy through structure is better than memorizing every little muscle and bone in the body. Structure leads to solid drawings, but means nothing without gesture-- which leads into my next book rec: Walt Stanchfields "Drawn to Life" books 1 and 2! These are notes from a Disney instructor and I have learned SO much from it. But you really have to take it in and pay attention to what the text is teaching. It's basically a textbook on achieving life and gesture into your drawings. I highly rec it~ Also an anatomy book that my teacher recc'ed is George Bridgman's anatomy books. The problem is that he's kind of hard to understand. @_@ The drawings are good learning materials, though! This book is more advanced, too.
I have a bunch more books I can rec as I own a whole library. x'D But it's good to start small with your study.
This site is similar to the other one, but with a different set of pics: [link] Posemaniacs.com is also good! [link] It's similar to the other site, but had 3d models. It's good for more extreme poses. However! I find that drawing from real people helps you improve much faster. Here's a tumblr all about artist advice! [link] I looked through it and there's a lot of great advice in here! This masterpost is also a great conglomeration of references: [link]
Good luck on your quest on drawing! Remember! Never compare yourself to others. If you see work you like, learn from it! Be patient~ Good drawing skill takes time and doesn't instantly happen. I've been going at this for years myself. Draw every day!
I actually have cosplayed at a convention! My most recent cosplays are Korra from the Legend of Korra and Princess of the Crystal from Penguindrum.

Thank you SO much! I'm so glad that you're helping me become a better artist! Maybe I can post something on here when I get better.
Today I decided to draw a little. I was drawing from one of Christopher Hart's manga monster books. I only drew two, though. My brother kept bothering me so I couldn't get all I wanted done.
I will probably be cosplaying Ty Lee from The Last Airbender. My friend will cosplay Katara. It would be really fun if the three of us could to get together to cosplay!

Hi Risako,
I came across your cool works and wanted to know if you might be interested in a little contest? I'm putting together a collection of artists doing a take on Jekyll & Hyde (but with a gender twist - guidelines on are on my page)
[link]
I plan to put together a compilation video of all the final submissions (with credit to everyone) by X-mas. It can be as simple as a couple images or a comic like format. I'm a film editor by day and have a lot of traffic coming thru my sites to possibly draw more viewership for you if you want. I know it's short notice - and most people are pretty busy this time of year. But I like your material and wanted to ask. Let me what ya think or if you have any questions.
Cheers
