and i'd try 3D but i have no idea what software to use and where to get it from.

I recomend you to start doing some simple stuff with Bryce 5 , its really intuitive and within 2 months you should have masterized it. Then i sugest that you pick either 3DS Max or MAYA , both have infinite 3D posibilities. I think you can get a trial copy of Bryce online, for free. If i find out where, i'll let you know
