Hey, what do you suggest for a decent/inexpensive flash? Everyone says the SB600, but I don't have the money I can spend on that at the moment. Suggestions are more than appreciated. I'll be running my 55-200mm Nikkor lens until I can get a better wide angle one (again .. more money!).

Better lens ... AKA the one you recommended that you have pictured as your main display pic

dye1337 In reply to GhostDakota [2006-11-17 06:32:42 +0000 UTC]

yep, very sharp when stopped down a tad, but very acceptable wide open. I do NOT recommend the use of a uv filter with one tho

Are you still in NJ? For some reason I remember you saying something about West Virginia..or somewhere around there. I haven't seen you since like, Mr.Paterson's class [which, for the record, was the most amusing class]. I still have the book sock you wrote "chode" on. I'm using it for my history book hahah.

One thing about your work that I feel I should let you know is that it gets better over time. Each image gets better. For instance, I can fall in love with it one day, sleep, and wakeup, and it's even more beautiful the next. Like nicely aged wine.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dye1337 In reply to FusciaDiamond [2006-09-18 16:19:22 +0000 UTC]

yeah haha, i occasionally look at my old work, and am like ew, that photo is terrible compared to my current work. Hopefully, unlike wine, I don't taste bad after a while...

acronymsical In reply to dye1337 [2006-09-18 03:49:25 +0000 UTC]

Bugs live in a very different world from us. They can do fun things like walk on water. I study physics in real life -- surface tension is highly interesting. [link] and [link] were the best I could do without my 2x tele (left it in the car) or any other way to get a real macro shot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dye1337 In reply to acronymsical [2006-09-18 03:54:31 +0000 UTC]

surface tension is very interesting . i'm assuming a 180 2.8 AIS? might wanna look into some extension tubes . What other lenses do you have?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

acronymsical In reply to dye1337 [2006-09-18 04:08:06 +0000 UTC]

It is indeed a 180/2.8. I've got a 2x teleconverter, but I left it in the car. (WHY?!?) I also regularly carry a 24mm/2.8 prime, my sharpest lens. I shoot both digital and b/w film, so those two and the obligatory normal lens (used occasionally) can go on either camera. I've also got 18-55 (used occasionally) and 70-300 zooms. As long as I'm working off a tripod, there's nothing quite like the image quality of a prime lens though.

dye1337 In reply to acronymsical [2006-09-18 04:16:03 +0000 UTC]

not always true . The 18-135 nikkor has a comparable sharpness of a 180 2.8 believe it or not.... the real difference is speed and distortion, the 18-135 loses in both aspects.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

acronymsical In reply to dye1337 [2006-09-18 04:34:22 +0000 UTC]

one other difference. i inherited the 180/2.8 from my father's junk drawer. i would have to buy an 18-135.

dye1337 In reply to acronymsical [2006-09-18 04:48:35 +0000 UTC]

good point haha. What do you use to meter the shots with?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

acronymsical In reply to dye1337 [2006-09-18 04:50:40 +0000 UTC]

Histogram. Best I can do without clipping. Adjust later with curves.
