While many people think that Grandpa Joe from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is an overall great and noble person, he is actually pure trash. Although he does several great things, such as encouraging Charlie to buy a Wonka bar and providing Charlie support through whatever he faces (Stuart), the bad things outnumber the great. He fakes a disability instead of helping out his poor family, he makes rude comments towards children, he steals some special soda that is still in the experimental phase, and these are just a few of the bad things he did (Stuart). Without the acknowledgement of Grandpa Joe’s bad deeds, he will seem like the kind elderly figure that many love. Grandpa Joe from the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is definitely pure trash because of his bad actions, rude words, and mental disorders that are shown throughout the entire movie.Plenty of evidence suggests Grandpa Joe may have some very common mental disorders such as depression, social phobia, or anxiety. Grandpa Joe being elderly also increases the likelihood that this is true since, “The prevalence of mental disorders is high among the elderly, with a prevalence of almost 20% in people without dementia aged 65 years and older” (Skoog 387). Grandpa Joe most likely has the mental disorder social phobia, for the symptoms include unreasonably fearing and avoiding social situations because they cause extreme discomfort (Skoog 388). Grandpa Joe stayed in a house for twenty years avoiding all social situations that are not between him and his family, which is what only a person with this mental disorder would do. Laying in a bed and being unhappy with him even claiming, “I never thought my life could be anything but catastrophe…” (Stuart), could be evidence that he has depression. Afterall, overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis of depressive symptoms are very possible in the elderly (Skoog 389), so this way of life may seem as being perfectly fine to most doctors and people, but obviously it is just a sign of his depression. Some factors commonly associated with depression in the elderly include aging, physical health, disability, decreased social network and support, personality factors, smoking, and alcohol consumption (Skoog 390), and with Grandpa Joe being an everyday smoker (Stuart), he is even more likely to have depression. In addition to this, “Recent research suggests that anxiety disorders may be as common, if not more common, as depression in the elderly.” (Skoog 387so if he has depression he must also have anxiety. It must be noted that the elderly typically try to avoid reporting psychotic symptoms (Skoog 388), so it truly is difficult to determine for certain if he has any of these common mental disorders. Any person with a mental disorder should be examined and diagnosed carefully, so they can go through the necessary treatment. If Grandpa Joe went through the right treatment, he might not have turned out to be the horrible person he is. However, it could still be argued that Grandpa Joe may just have a more uncommon mental disorder known as factitious disorder. Grandpa Joe unquestionably has factitious disorder which is also known as hypochondria since he shows the common symptoms and signs of having one. “Factitious disorder is a mental disorder in which a person acts as if he or she has a physical or mental illness. People with factitious disorder deliberately create or exaggerate symptoms of an illness. They have an inner need to be seen as ill or injured.” (“Factitious Disorders”). In the movie, Grandpa Joe fakes being sick and bedridden for twenty years and then verifies this being true by stepping out of bed and performing a musical number, and finding the energy to walk the entire way through a massive chocolate factory full of weird rooms and hallways (Stuart). He imposes this disorder on himself, which includes, “...the falsifying of psychological or physical signs or symptoms…” (“Factitious Disorders”). Because “Most patients with factitious disorder have histories of abuse, trauma, family dysfunction, social isolation, early chronic medical illness, or professional experience in healthcare (training in nursing, health aid work, etc.)” (“Factitious Disorders”),he is even more likely to have a factitious disorder with his constant and continuous social isolation. He may have a little bit of innocence though, afterall, “Most people with this condition do not believe they have factitious disorder. They may not be entirely aware of why they are inducing their own illness. Many people with factitious disorder may also suffer from other mental disorders, particularly personality or identity disorders.” (“Factitious Disorders”). Whether he knows he has factitious disorder or not, this still makes him unfit to have any part in the life of a young growing boy, and this still makes him an unnecessary burden on the extremely poor Bucket family. The Bucket family is kindhearted and very hardworking with Mrs. Bucket working extra late and Charlie even becoming a newspaper boy, all while also taking care of four needy grandparents (Stuart). They should not be forced with the extra responsibility of taking care of an elderly man with this toxic mental disorder. This proves further that he is garbage. Not only do his mental disorders confirm that he is pure trash, but his actions throughout the entire movie undeniably do.Grandpa Joe’s actions throughout the movie prove he is atrocious when he continues to give Charlie chocolate, fakes a disability, steals, and attempts to show he and Charlie are more special than anyone else. Early in the movie, Grandpa Joe and Grandpa George give Charlie a Wonka bar and Grandpa Joe gives him another further in the movie, even though one is enough especially since the Bucket family hardly has enough money for anything other than cabbage water (Stuart). It is a selfish action the way he spent that money on something small instead of something larger such as a loaf of bread. That extra money could of even went to Mrs. Bucket so that way she could save it in a bank account or spend it as wisely as possible. Grandpa Joe fakes a disability and is capable of walking and working, but chooses not to do so (Stuart). Grandpa Joe surely does fake a disability because he gets out of bed after twenty years as soon as he gets the opportunity to visit the chocolate factory (Stuart). When he gets out of bed, he does the very inhumane action of stealing from an underprivileged child. Grandpa Joe steals Charlie’s ticket and sings an entire musical number claiming that he himself has the golden ticket even though it is Charlie’s (Stuart). No kind or good person would ever even consider stealing from a child, let alone sweet Charlie Bucket. Selfish Grandpa Joe clearly does not care about doing the right thing. Later in the movie, Grandpa Joe steals some of Willy Wonka’s special Fizzy Lifting Drink even though it was not safe and nearly causes him and Charlie to die (Stuart). To use poor enough judgement to almost cause a death is terrible. Grandpa Joe may think this stealing is okay, since throughout the movie he tries to show him and Charlie are more special than others. He tells Charlie, “One? I’m counting on you to find all five!” (Stuart) when talking about the golden tickets. Charlie bought less than five Wonka bars, so it would of been impossible to find all five golden tickets. When Grandpa Joe and Grandpa George give Charlie a Wonka bar, he makes Charlie believe that he will get the golden ticket since he wants it more (Stuart). Grandpa Joe thinks he is special enough that he does not have to say sorry to Willy Wonka or Charlie for the Fizzy Lifting Drink situation (Stuart). All of these actions clearly verify that he is pure trash, and especially his rude words and insults during the entire movie.Grandpa Joe’s words further he is awful when he verbally insults adults, children, and things throughout the entire movie. Everyone inside and outside of the movie are kind enough to not criticize or insult people and things while the subject is in their presence, but not mean old Grandpa Joe. In the beginning of the movie, Grandpa Joe insults the cold floor claiming, “Well … maybe if the floor wasn’t so cold.” (Stuart). This is extremely rude due to the Bucket family being so poor that they can hardly afford food let alone heating. If he does not like the cold floor, then he should get a job and make some money to buy a pair of nice warm slippers. While in the chocolate factory, Grandpa Joe insults one of the female children saying, “If she’s a lady, I’m a Vermicious Knid.” (Stuart). Any person that insults a helpless misunderstood child to others is nasty and vile. He does not know her home life or situation and she could just be going through a tough time at home or at school. Grandpa Joe shares his opinion by telling Charlie, “What she wants is a good kick in the pants.” (Stuart). Kicking a child is not what a good elderly person does, and it is irritating and repulsive that Grandpa Joe would even make a joke about abusing a child like that. At a certain point in the factory he insults one of the important rooms uttering, “Inventing room? It looks more like a Turkish bath to me.” (Stuart). Everyone has different preferences when it comes to room style and neatness, and Grandpa Joe lives in a disgusting room, so he had no place to make a negative remark like that.Grandpa Joe continues to insult the female children with comments like, “Because, Charlie, she’s a nitwit.” (Stuart). At the time of Veruca’s near death experience he even feels inclined to make a crude joke that Mr. Salt finally got what he wanted that Veruca went first (Stuart), which refers to her dying. Even when Violet claims that she feels funny, Grandpa Joe says that he’s not surprised (Stuart). He should of kept that bad comment to himself instead of saying it out loud for everyone on the factory tour to hear. Grandpa Joe also scolds and insults Willy Wonka by saying, “You’re a crook! You’re a cheat and a swindler! That’s what you are. How can you do a thing like this? Build up a little boy’s hopes and then smash all his dreams to pieces. You’re an inhuman monster!” (Stuart). Grandpa Joe made the conclusion that Willy Wonka is an overall bad person even though he had only known him for less then a day. Grandpa Joe should not be judging anyone since he was a worthless, unproductive man for so many years and was leeching like a parasite on the Bucket family. Not only does he insult people within the movie, but he even insults people outside of the movie when he spoke the words, “It should, Charlie. It’s got more gas in it than a politician.” (Stuart). It is definite that Grandpa Joe is quite rude and has a tendency to insult anything that he does not like. Not only is this negatively impacting his life, but also the life of the entire Bucket family which he was constantly around and talking to since he stayed in a bed for twenty years straight. The relentless insults prove along with everything else that he is an incompetent fool.Grandpa Joe from the movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is obviously pure trash because of his terrible actions, mean words, and mental disorders that are shown constantly throughout the entire movie. With him having either depression, social phobia, or anxiety, he is a very unthoughtful and unstable person (Skoog 387). Since he certainly has factitious disorder, his mental state is complete chaos and troublesome at functioning properly (“Factitious Disorders”). This may be why his actions are awful and poor throughout the entire movie, along with his nasty and offensive comments (Stuart). Grandpa Joe should never be seen as a great and noble person, no matter his age, looks, or the very few good things he does, since he is evil. Because most people think highly of him, they are shaded from the truth and it is important to make the facts obvious. While many people think that Grandpa Joe from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is an overall great and noble person, he is actually pure trash.
