Hi^^,
sorry this reply took so long, but real life has been very stressful these last few weeks...
I've just finished an internship and now I need to look for a flat, since I'm moving to a different city to study. And I'm going to fill in for the secretary at my parent's office while she's on vacation, so it doesn't look much better in the near future

BUT I do have a week of freetime in between now and then and I have something sitting on my hard-drive, that I'm just not happy with, yet. Don't know when I'll get around to actually finishing it >.<, but knowing that you're waiting will probably spur me on

Now, before I say anything else I'd like to state that I like RDJ. I really do. He is a very talented actor and rather attractive .
But he's just NOT Sherlock Holmes. In any respect.
I don't want to go about bashing the movie, as your icon tells me that you've enjoyed it, but it was rather painful for me to watch. None of the characters was how the book canon describes them and that just ruined it for me.

None taken! I understand that for many die hard Holmes fans, the new movie was an ordeal. Personally, I enjoyed the movie despite my long-standing Holmes obsession. I felt that the movie did Conan Doyle justice...in the time that he wrote the original stories, they were considered edgy and modern. In order to get that effect in today's world, the writers of the movie had to tweak the characters.

I felt that the acting in the movie was superb. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were fantastic choices for the parts that they had to fill. RDJ's interpretation of Holmes was unique and very interesting. I always enjoy watching film adaptions of the Sherlock Holmes stories and comparing them to each other and the originals. This new Holmes was less formal and eccentric, and more socially awkward. And I loved the dynamic between Watson and Holmes to. It was an angle that's never really been explored before. You can tell Watson loves Holmes (as a brother!) but is also thoroughly exasperated with him. They truly did bicker like brothers. ^^

HOWEVER!

While I admire Downey Jr.'s acting ability, when I look at him...I won't ever see Sherlock Holmes (Iron Man, perhaps, but never Holmes). Jeremy Brett was the only actor that truly BECAME Holmes for me. They are one in the same person in my mind. 'Tis why I love him so.

So, I understand when those who loved the original stories and were hoping to see a movie with THOSE characters were disappointed. It doesn't hurt my feelings! I enjoyed the film because I set it apart as a completely different entity. If I had been comparing it to the Granada series the entire time...I wouldn't have enjoyed it.

I see your point, but I don't think that, just because Holmes was considered
edgy and modern in the time he was written, they had to change his character so completely
just to have that effect today. Why choose Sherlock Holmes, when he doesn't meet the criteria
for the movie you want to make? The only thing the movie and the books still have in common
are the names of the characters that appear in it (imo).

I really tried to view it as a completely different entity, but I couldn't!
I kept having those "That's supposed to be Sherlock Holmes"-moments, where I couldn't help
but shudder at the utter wrongness of it all.
And then I thought of all the fanart and fanfics it would spawn D:
xD

I just wish they had made the same movie about a different detective. After all, it really wasn't
that bad, per se.

Yeah...after I saw the trailer, which was WAY before the movie came out...I had to recover. I was pretty pissed...ESPECIALLY about Irene Adler. Then, after a while, I was all like, "Meh...it's only a movie. I'll just take it as it is."
The soundtrack was really great, though. Like, wow.

Yeah, when I heard there was gonna be a new Sherlock Holmes movie I was ecstatic,
then I watched the trailer and was upset, but mostly because of Watson punching
Holmes in the face for no apparent reason.
I'm afraid, I don't really remember the soundtrack that much, but I think I liked it ^^.
I guess my attention was just captured by so many other things.

Ha! Just listened to some of it on You Tube. Yup, I like it . It's not what I would
usually associate with Sherlock Holmes, but the whole movie wasn't. So it fits the
movie perfectly and it's beautiful music, what more can one want?

I'll admit that Movie!Holmes could be quite irritating at times, but I still don't think he deserved it .
And even if he did, when was the last time you punched any of your friends in the face, because they said something stupid? No matter how insulting, I wouldn't do it (I guess you wouldn't either).
And Watson of all people certainly wouldn't, being a gentleman and all.

I'm just going to asume now, that you've read the books. If you haven't and don't want to be spoiled, don't read the next part.

There is actually one instance in the books, in which Holmes would have deserved such a violent reaction to his actions, and that's for letting Watson think that he died at Reichenbach and then disappearing for three years. I think Watson forgave him a bit too readily. Book!Holmes can be quite the jackass from time to time, too.

I guess the problem with hiding Holme's tobacco is, that Holmes would just deduce where it's hidden.

Then again... Holmes would be affected by nicotine withdrawal and there'd be no pipe to soothe his nerves, so it might just work. lol

Haha, Mrs. Hudson is the ideal choice! xD She'd give Holmes a hard time searching for the tobacco and she's in a good position to get at any new tobacco he might buy .
But if I were Watson I wouldn't keep this punishment up for too long. I don't smoke myself, but I know my friends can get pretty annoying when they suffer from nicotine withdrawal lol.

Lol, yeah, being friends with Holmes isn't easy. But he sure makes up for it by making Watson's life much more interesting

I'm sorry my replies take so long, but I have to study for my "Abitur" (the final exams you have to take here in Germany before you can go to university) and therefore my computer stays off most of the time. >.< So much work, so little time x_x

Wasn't it Holmes who compared the human brain to an attic? Mine definintely feels like all the storage space is used up and now I'm scrambling to find a free spot to put all that history of art in, that I still have to learn .

Abitur?! I learned about that in my German class first year. That's what you take at the end of Gymnasium, right? Wow, that is so cool that you live in Germany!

I'm going through finals right now at the University of Iowa and it's been pretty rough. I like to compare the lecture classes here to a professor dumping a tub of water on me while all I have is a little styrofoam cup and they expect me to catch ALL of it!

But the good news is that after this week, Summer break is here and I can start READING again! Like, for fun! lol! Have you ever read a book called the Canary Trainer? It's supposed to star Holmes...but also included the Phantom of the Opera or something. Anyway, I've been meaning to read it all school year and now I'll FINALLY have time!

You're right about the Abitur (haha, it's strange to have a German word in an English sentence xD).
So you've learned how to speak German at school? If so, you're the second American here on DA that I've talked to who has ^^. It always makes me kinda happy to see that someone has taken an interest in our language, since German is not spoken in many countries, like English or Spanish is, and Germany isn't exactly a paradise for tourists. I'm still amazed it's even taught in American schools .

So you live in Iowa? Now that is cool! Living in the state where Captain Kirk was born rather beats livin in Germany, I think xD.

I'm halfway through my exams now and it'll be approx. 4 weeks until I can start reading for fun again u__u. I actually should be studying maths right now... procrastinating? Who? Me? Lalalala....
I haven't read the Canary Trainer yet, but it certainly sounds interesting . The Phantom and Holmes are two characters I hold very dear, so the book has the potential to be pretty awesome . Well, I'll make sure to let you know what I think, then. ^^ Currently, I'm working through a series written by Nevada Barr about a National Parks Ranger, Anna Pigeon. They're very well written, and the first two books have been good mysteries.

LOL. I always forget that Captain Kirk was born in Iowa! I guess Iowa is cool after all! But Europe has so much more history...and castles. And Martin Luther was from Germany! ^^ So whereabouts in Germany are you from? My church has just formed a partnership with a small church in Chemnitz (formerly Karl Marx Stadt). I have been wanting to visit the Fatherland for a while.

I'm glad that I got a chance to learn German in high school, though. We had the choice of Spanish, French, German, or Japanese and I think I made the best choice of the four (even if it would have been more helpful to learn Spanish...we have a quite a large Mexican population here). But it's been a few years since I've graduated and I've lost quite a bit of vocabulary...and genitiv case always confused me. >___< I still try to speak it whenever I can, though. languages fascinate me.

I live half an hour away from Frankfurt, that's about 400 km away from Chemnitz, so I've never been there, I'm afraid. I really hope you'll like it here, should you ever come to visit, and that the culture shock won't be too great ^^''.

In June, when I'm finally finished with my Abitur, my family and I are going to the US for three weeks ^______^. I'm so excited! I've been looking forward to this vacation for quite some time now . It makes me grin stupidly just thinking about it x3.

The first foreign language I learned at school was Latin, which doesn't get you very far, being a dead language and all. The only other language I learned besides Latin and English is Italian, but I'm not at all good at that. Quite hopeless, in fact. It's a shame, really, I'd love to be able to speak more foreign languages u_u.
I've heard German is very hard to learn, so kudos to you! ^^ We do have a rather complicated grammar.

I'm sorry it took me so long to answer (again >.<)! I'll be faster the next time. There's only the oral exam in social studies now, and then it's finally over!

Frankfurt, huh? That's pretty cool. My German teacher, Frau Gaddie, told us that the best part about living in Germany is FRISH BROT JEDEN MORGEN. lol I'm excited for that.
It would be really cool to learn Latin. I, myself, would be interested in taking a Greek class. Or maybe Russian. I don't know...I like languages.
I'm really relieved now that it's summer. I can't wait to hit the pool or go hiking. It snows too much here in the winter and sometimes even in the spring. Iowa is kind of weird when it comes to weather.

Ah yes, fresh bread ! I miss that sometimes when we're on vacation, but we don't eat it every morning, that would probably be a bit too much effort. I usually only eat two slices of toast xD. I hope you won't be disappointed.
I think it's great when people are able to speak several languages. I hope I can find the time and patience to learn some of them in the future. Right now I'm just happy that I'm finished with school and need a break.
It's not really hot enough to go swimming yet, but if we're lucky it might be in a few days x3.

And there's something Sherlock Holmes related that I wanted to ask you. Do you know, if Watson's eye colour is mentioned anywhere in the books? I always imagine David Burke when I think of Watson, but with all those Jude Laws floating around I started to wonder. It's probably not in there -in what instances do you talk about your own eye colour?- but maybe Holmes said something about that once. Unlikely, but I thought you might know more about that.

Okay, so I checked up on Watson's eye color...and I couldn't find ANYTHING. I am rather partial to David Burke's Watson...whenever I go back and rewatch the Granada series my passion for Brett, Burke, and Hardwicke comes back in full force. Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes. Others may try...but they just can't become the character in the same way...if that makes any sense.

However, I always enjoy watching other actors play the part of Holmes if I make sure not to compare them to Brett (no one can compare). I've watched A LOT of productions...and my favorite, as of yet, was a 2002 BBC production of The Hound of the Baskervilles starring Richard Roxburgh as Holmes and Ian Hart as Watson. They're a lot younger than one usually pictures the characters, like RDJ and Jude Law...but the style stays true to the Victorian context and isn't all 'edgy.'

If you're interested, I would highly recommend this one. [link] Warning: it doesn't follow the book exactly, so there's something new in it for even the most avid Conan Doyle readers (especially if you read this particular story as often as I ^^).

What you've said about Jeremy Brett just being Holmes makes perfect sense to me. I feel exactly the same way whenever I watch him play .

When I read the name Ian Hart, it started to ring a bell and so I checked my bookshelf and I actually own this production on DVD x).
I think it's from my early days of being a Sherlock Holmes fan, when I couldn't resist anything to do with my new favorite detective (it was also rather cheap, so I bought it... x3). It's been quite a while since I've seen it, so I might just watch it again . I remember thinking that Ian Hart is much better as Watson than he is as Remus Lupin.

Oh, and have you seen the new BBC programm "Sherlock"? From what I've heard there'll be three episodes of 90 minutes and its first episode "A Study In Pink" aired just this sunday. It tells the story of a Holmes and Watson that live in the 21 century. I think they did a great job of "fitting" the characters into our modern times. I've just watched it (on youtube...) and enjoyed it immensely! <33333333333
I hope I'll be able to watch the second and third part, too.

I wonder, do you get British TV channels in America?

Ian Hart played Lupin? I thought that he was Professor Quirrell...I just might have to check that out. My favorite part about that particular depiction was Holmes, though. I REALLY love Richard Roxburgh (like, WOW) and it was like candy to see him in my favorite role of all time. LOL! I'm such a Holmes fangirl...

Oh! Have you ever read fanfiction before? I found a Sherlock Holmes fanfiction that was actually pretty good. I mean...it was Watson/Holmes slash, which was great. ^^ It bothers me that people are all into pairing them with each other. They're really close...but in an intimate friendship. What's your take?
