I teach myself Japanese in my spare time. Even though I am not fluent nor at an intermediate level, I can read some short sentences, depending on whether I recognize the characters or not.
I also pick up on some Japanese phrases by listening to music and watching Japanese drama's and films.
I'm better at speaking than reading or writing.
