Uhm...so you said it would be fine if I came by to ask any art questions from you so...How do you capture light from the trees, I mean it's distorted but the placement is weird and I can't get it...help???
π: 0 β©: 1
WinterDaysK In reply to BobaChoco [2017-06-23 03:32:59 +0000 UTC]
Which part of the light are u referring to? The soft light shining through the leaves or the hard light that's hitting on objects?
Oh, and I just realised I haven't replied your question on long dresses
Sorry about that, must have missed it
π: 0 β©: 1
BobaChoco In reply to WinterDaysK [2017-06-23 03:46:50 +0000 UTC]
Uhm I guess both since it cooperates each other to the piece and when I don't understand either it makes the piece a little combusts?
Also don't worry about it! You can answer when ever you want!
π: 0 β©: 1
WinterDaysK In reply to BobaChoco [2017-06-26 15:02:05 +0000 UTC]
Well, at first I would just focus on the lights that would be hitting on the object then rub away bits and pieces of it, leaving the only some of the lights. In this part of the lighting, the shapes aren't that distorted. It gets more and more distorted the farther away it gets from the main side where the light hits. Then, I would add other lights mimicking the leaf shades as best as I could
I would observe from life and draw from life every now and then. It really helps with the lighting.
The main soft light follows the hard light, coming from the same direction, the other soft lights that are formed either by the hard light bouncing off of other objects or reflection, is just really up to u to decide how u like it. As long as u follow the simple light and shade rule, I don't think there will be too big of a problem.
Observing and drawing from life really helps with that.
Hope I explained it well enough

Hmm...I think that kinda makes sense? Thanks! Another question I have is how do you draw men. Besides the typical thought of rigid, short hair and facial hair, there are men that can be soft and gelatinous and baby smooth with long hair. I want diversity but it ends up looking like a girl...this is mainly the reason why most of my ocs are girls...

WinterDaysK In reply to BobaChoco [2017-08-15 10:33:29 +0000 UTC]
Sorry I left you hanging for so long, but this question had me thinking and experimenting a little.
Your question is that u worry your softer men end up looking too much like a girl right? Well I think it's ok for them to look like a girl if what your going for is a male with more feminine features.
If both female and male have flat breasts, then I think it's quite normal for people to not be able to tell their gender. A lot of anime characters are like this. Also, there are quite a lot of cute kids with round eyes and cherry lips that are actually boys.
The key is, don't make their chest look as full. If you don't want them to look as feminine, you could just put in a bit more masculine features in like sharper jawlines, broader shoulders and such.
There's this other thing you can do, which is to make their eyes sharper. Looks tougher and more mescaline in some ways.

BobaChoco In reply to WinterDaysK [2017-08-15 15:40:45 +0000 UTC]
Huh I never thought of that. I'm always so finicky with that since I can only draw really feminine girls and non gender guys. So I guess this kinda relieves me a little.
Next question: do you know how to do gradients in traditional style and to shade them?

WinterDaysK In reply to BobaChoco [2017-08-22 10:06:49 +0000 UTC]
If your using markers, just colour in between colours between the two colours you want! There's usually a white marker ( basically a marker with transparent ink) in a marker set, it's really useful.
Watercolour is somewhat simpler, because you just need to start with a colour and gradually add in the other colour. Like if it was yellow to red, your start with just yellow paint, and adding more red into the yellow pallet as you paint. It works better when the paint is wetter.
If I was painting on a watercolour paper, I would simply add a thin layer of shade, for example blue or purple, over the painted picture. I do pretty much the same thing with markers, but if I was doing gouache, I would gradient my shade.

BobaChoco In reply to WinterDaysK [2017-08-22 11:29:33 +0000 UTC]
Yeah but for markers I hafta take a long time to gradient my inks together resulting in damaging the paper. But I meant was if the character has a gradient in the clothing do you shade it with a solid color or a slightly darker gradient?
(Lol sorry if this is sorta bugging you)
π: 0 β©: 1
WinterDaysK In reply to BobaChoco [2017-10-22 06:35:41 +0000 UTC]
I would usually shade with a solid colour
Donβt worry, this isnβt bugging me
Sorry to keep u waiting every time though

It's honestly fine! I just really regret for spamming you a dosage of questions whenever you get back to me.
Another question though is: what do you do if you're too lazy to do the background of a piece?
π: 0 β©: 1
WinterDaysK In reply to BobaChoco [2017-10-22 06:41:04 +0000 UTC]
Do u mean colouring it or drawing it completely?
π: 0 β©: 1
WinterDaysK In reply to BobaChoco [2017-10-22 06:47:54 +0000 UTC]
I would probably draw some rough outlines of buildings or trees and colour them in with plain colours and not shade them. Or just draw out things that r closer to my characters and leave the background blank or fill it in with one colour

Oooooooooo thank you!
Hmmm I suppose what questions I have left for you is what programs would you recommend for digital art?

WinterDaysK In reply to BobaChoco [2017-10-22 16:30:54 +0000 UTC]
I use photoshop, so I prefer it over sai
But a lot of my friends preferes sai, because they r more familiar with it.
I think it really depends on which one appeals to u more. Or what kind of functionality it looking for. For example, people who likes to draw manga might like to use sai and clip studio because of their lines, blending brushes and screen tones. People who like realistic drawings might tend to lean upon using photoshop or painter because of their realistic brushes, colour grading and adjustment functions. Some people use more than just one at a time. One of my friends uses sai for inking and photoshop for colouring and adjustments.

I don't really have anyone to ask tho since all my friends have been digital artists for a long time so Google it is then.

You might have to look it up yourself to be sure though.

Don't know if this helps you in any way.
But when drawing illustrations, it's quite normal for people looking to categorising character gender based on their hair, cuz that's the easiest way to distinguish their differences, and the most common and recognisable features in male and female. So I really is ok.
Oh, and clothes are pretty helpful in distinguishing genders!
If u still couldn't quite get the feeling, I think the easiest way to get used to drawing them is mimicking. You can find some drawings you like to try yourself. Whilst mimicking, you'll gradually get the idea.
Hope this was helpful...
