Sorry that I am replying to a rather old comment, but I must speak.
Now I am serious. That is your opinion. It is not right. It is not wrong. They are fictional characters, and we are all entitled to our opinions. It is rather stupid to say we cannot have a certain opinion about a piece of fiction and say that our differing opinion is wrong. No one, fictional or real, deserves love or hate. They earn it.
I must say I completely disagree, especially on Winry. I am not a hater, but I dislike many aspects of her character, and the fact that a woman wrote such a weak, cowardly, ditzy cry-baby, whose life revolves around the Elrics.
That is in the manga/2009 anime. At least in the 2003 she has her own life and actually does things outside of crying, waiting, auto mailing making and repairing, and worrying).
I hardly think a woman that serves/does what a man says (As most of the FMA woman serve/are second to/or are in the shadow of boys/men) or one why cries all the time for no good reason are sting. In addition, let us not get started with Arakawa's double standards in regards to fights in the manga, the damsel-in-distress parts, the “Winry Gun Scene”, and her opinions on how men and woman should look...
FMA is no "Naruto", "Bleach", "Reborn!" or "Kuroshitsuji" (Elizabeth's one great moment was ruin by her crying and being knocked out), but it is still pretty sexist at times. In addition, it is surprising that, coming from women, “Fullmetal Alchemist”, “Reborn!” and “Kuroshitsuji” are so sexist, which makes it worse in my opinion. J.K. Rowling does a far better job, in my opinion. “Claymore” and “Black Lagoon” (if you forget the outfits) and “Soul Eater” (if you forget the fanservice” are also good examples of the kind of stories that contain strong, brilliant female characters.
Arakawa is not a god and is not ‘holy’ as so many claim, and does not deserve only love, and can be disliked, along with her sexist female characters and storylines (in my opinion). Her stories are far from masterpieces, and they have a lot of clichés and sexism.
I have yet to read a manga/book that I can consider a masterpiece, even if there are some I absolutely love.
However, I do like some aspects of the manga, Xing in particular.
Remember this: Love is just as pointless as hate when it comes to fiction. They are opinions, nothing more, nothing less.

I do not hate the character. I even stated I did not. It was not a rant. I was explaiing.

I am not like most of the haters/dislikers who calls characters like Winry a bitch andsay should should die and crap like that. I am not a hater of just female characters. I love "Soul Eater" (apart from the fanservice) and I hate Black STar as he is the same as Naruto before the timeskip.

Um, pardon me? I'd just like to put up a counter argument to your statement....

You say she's immature, but in fact, she's actually very responsible. I mean, she lost both her parents at a young age and works at an automail shop by doing a good deal of the work (along with Pinako, who wins the most kick-ass old lady of the year award). That takes maturity.

For another thing, I imagine working with putting together pieces of metal is very hot work, especially the molding and everything.. I've been to the countryside, too. It can get humid out there. I don't blame her for wearing a tube top underneath her working jumpsuit. And if you point out the skirt in some of the episodes... Honestly, that's pretty decent, especially when you compare it to today's trends. I mean, a jacket, a white shirt, and a skirt that's honestly not that short.

I can't see Winry as being selfish. If she was, wouldn't she make Ed pay a lot for all the times he breaks his automail. She even visits him in the hospital when he's incapable of moving. Pretty unselfish if you ask me. If you're talking about how upset she gets whenever Ed and Al continue on their journey... Hey, her two best friends are going on a journey that is undoubtedly dangerous and could cost them their lives. I'd be upset too. It's logical.

I did not say immature, I said irresponsible. Take the episode where Ed almost gets killed by Number 48 in Laboratory 5. Winry forgot to put a piece into Ed's arm and it almost got him killed! His arm fell apart in the middle of the battle all because of her... and she didn't even bother to tell him it was her fault. She let him take the blame and beat him with her wrench yet again!!

All I have to say about her clothes is that she has no excuse. When she was actually working on automail in one episode, her jacket was on. Then when she heard the boys came back to visit, she took it off and revealed her CENSOR BAR bra.

Not selfish?? Ah, but that's where you're wrong! She does indeed make Ed pay for his automail. And in fact, whenever she's with them in a town that actually has mechanic shops, she expects them to empty their pockets so that they can buy her every little thing she wants. And when the Elric brothers decide to pay her a visit, if they're not in good shape, she doesn't bother to ask if they're alright. She just attacks them with her GIANT EVIL WRENCH OF DOOM! Then she blames Ed for always getting into trouble when it's not even his fault half the time that people come out of nowhere and attack him. I think that's pretty selfish that all she can say when she sees them is, "LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO MY AUTOMAIL!!"

I apologize for the mix up of words. My keyboard was being bipolar and not letting me type correctly, so I really just copy and pasted my last response. (The fact that I suffer from lack of sleep probably doesn't help either...) Anyway.

In the case of when she forgot to put in a piece of Ed's automail, I would like to simply remind you that the characters in FMA are supposed to be portayed as humanly as possible. People makes mistakes, sometimes even in terrible circumstances. Ah, that reminds me, I think even the automail was a rush job because Ed himself wanted to get back to Central as quickly as possible, right? It's only to be expected that something would go wrong. Also, I believe she was genuinely sorry and ashamed when she learned that, because of her faulty work, Ed got injured like he did.
The reason she didn't tell him was exactly because of that shame; she didn't want Ed's opinion of her to lessen. Another, perfectly human trait. I know I lie whenever I don't want to disappoint some one close to me.

I don't really see the big deal with Winry's top. It has to be the most over-used excuse for fangirls to hate on her, and it's not exactly teh best of reasons. Ed and Al are like brothers to her, right? The sentiment is returned. That means she doesn't have to feel uncomfortable about what she wears. I'm sure if they were some random strangers who wanted their automail fixed, she would be a lot more modest. As it is, because they're "family", they're not exactly going to ogle each other. Or... Winry thinks Ed is gay, and that's the reason she doesn't think he'll ogle. XD (I'm trying to ligthen up the discussion, please don't maim me.)

As for the whole thing with them buying her things when there's an automail shop around... Well, Ed is loaded. Money isn't exactly a problem for him. Remember the whole thing with Schezka? We weren't told exactly how much he gave her, but judging by her and Ross's response, it was have been a lot. Money is the farthest thing from Ed's mind. Besides, friends buying each other things when they have they have the money is a pretty accepted action. I know that when I have money and a friend of mine wants something, I buy it for them, even if they don't say anything. They do likewise for me. I'm sure that even if Winry didn't drag Ed everywhere (like best friends are prone to do), he and Al would see her glance at one wrench set and offer to buy it for her.

As for her temper... Well, it is an anime/manga. I'm sure that's more meant to be humorous. If it were real life, I'm sure Winry would know better to then to throw a wrench at Ed's head.

As for her concern about the automail... Ed and Al must have come back to Resembool dozens of times over the years to have his automail fixed. I'm sure that, early on, Winry would interrogate them on what had happened and, because they don't want her to worry, the brothers wouldn't tell her anything. After a while, I imagine she just gave up. The only way she could properly show her concern is by yelling at them. In a very subtle way, she is hoping that if she yells enough at Ed about breaking his automail, he'll eventually stop getting into the dangerous situations that invovle his automail getting broken, out of sheer terror for Winry's wrath if nothing else. Parents do it to their kids, too, whenever, say, the little rugrats run off and play in the street or whatever. The idea is "if I keep punishing them for doing something dangerous, then they'll soon stop doing it so that they don't get punished".

As for her "not wanting his opinion of her to lessen"... I don't get that at all. Seriously, if you know you did something wrong, even if you're afraid of the consequence, you have no right to lie. She let him take the blame and get disappointed in himself and halfway killed instead of her being responsible and saying "It was my fault, I'm sorry." We all know he would've forgiven her, even if he would've been mad. But that just shows me that she's not selfless and responsible.

Then as for her feeling more comfortable around them... I just see it as a reason to strip in front of boys. I don't buy "I'm comfortable in front of them" at all. I don't walk around my family in my underwear.

The temper, I understand is supposed to be funny. But honestly, you can't get mad at someone if it's not their fault. If the homunculi wanna go hunt down Ed and try to kill him because he's a really super special awesome alchemist, it's not his fault! If Scar wants to kill him because he's in the military, it's not his fault! And if Dante wants to kill him because he wants to save people, it's not his fault either! She has no right to get mad at him. If she's gonna get mad at anyone, it should be the bad guys.

Ha, I'm actually more of an Izumi/Olivier/Envy/Hawkeye fan (not pairing, just all of them), so as long as no one hates on them, I'm good. ^^ Ack, I have the inane urge to write something like "-nudgewink-" or something, but I want to seem like I have some amount of credibility. XD

Yes, I can understand how it might seem confusing to a person whose mind doesn't think the same way. I've done the same thing Winry has done, however, multiple times. It's an irrational fear, just like how a person might be afraid of chopsticks or something. (There is a phobia for that. Random fact, heh.) The person (like Winry or myself, for example) may know that it's a stupid reason, and may know that they should tell the truth, but when the time comes, they just can't bring themselves to do it. It's a human mind thing, and that's one of the most complicated things on this planet. People can guess about why a person will do something, but the brain is too complex in that aspect. I could go on and on, but you'd die at your keyboard of boredom.

Your family and my family are very different, then. My own sis and I are very lax in how much we wear or don't wear, and my own little brother is also fond of running around with not a thing on. Of course, he's also not even in the second grade, so he has an excuse. The rest of my family does not. The fact that we live in the middle of a desert does not help things, probably... (Although we do dress better in public).Anyway, it's just the way she does them. Every family is different.

Remember, Winry doesn't know about any of those things, or at least until the last few episodes or something. (I'd have to rewatch everything to be a 100% positive, 'tho.) The brothers don't tell her squat. They want to keep her safe. How can she beat on the bad guys if she doesn't even know who the bad guys are? Not that Ed and Al would let her even if she did know... Although I like to believe that most of the characters in FMA have more common sense then to go actively looking for a villain who could easily blow up their brains or chop them into bits with super powers and what have you.

I could also go into something about how I thought the homunculi/Dante didn't really want Ed dead, just wanted to use his awesome alchemy skills for their own means, but that would be nit-picking. You're too interesting/fun a debate partner for me to do that.
.....What does that say about me when I've gone to the point where I think the friendly argument has gotten fun? Hm.

Infact, one of my good friends is a Winry cosplayer. But she doesn't wear the (what I like to call) "Censorbar" outfit.
