# About me

Hi, my name is Shelby. I am a Norwegian currently living in Texas. I am an avid lover of all animals, the outdoors, and all things nature. I love to draw, photograph, make posters/collages and paint. I am a supporter of *responsible* hunting, and yes you can love animals and still hunt, this does *NOT* include trophy hunting, poaching, etc. Only responsible, sustainable, and humane hunting. I have done extensive research on the issue of captivity, and you will find, especially for animals as intelligent as cetaceans, I support it 0%. I have also done extensive research in dog breeds and have no support for breed-discrimination, I am actually a professional Dog Trainer and head of my department. I am a kind, respectful art-lover. If you are nice to me, I am nice to you - simple. I love constructive criticism, pointers, and even polite debates. Also, feel free to ask any questions you may have about my, my art, or the subject of it!

As I can tell you are very passionate about animals, I'd like to let you know about a group I just made that raises awareness about animal cruelty around the world. The group is called KeepAnimalsSafe, and I hope you can look into it since I just now started it.

I'm hearing rumors of people wanting to start banning huskies in some places.

People are full of shit.  >_<
Pits and huskies and the rest of the "dangerous" breeds just have to be handled correctly.  They can be the sweetest dogs ever.  I'm so annoyed with this bull.

I know this is a very old comment but I just wanted to let you know how right you are. Pitties are just the sweetest, those big ol' smiles give me strength, I swear.

You know what breed IS dangerous? Man.

Igloo9201 In reply to GothicChains [2015-05-26 23:26:47 +0000 UTC]

Haha, it's alright.  My opinion remains the same; all breeds can be amazing dogs, including bullies.  I've never had much personal experience with pit bulls, but I know that they're great dogs.  Aggression is a behavioral response...not something pre-programmed into a certain breed.

Frankly, most humans are more aggressive and dangerous than any pit bull.

ANY dog needs to be handled, trained, and treated correctly otherwise they can be a danger.

Igloo9201 In reply to Thylacinus1 [2015-04-26 22:41:02 +0000 UTC]

Exactly.  I don't get why people think that certain breeds will kill you, while other dogs are perfectly fine.  I've been able to talk to ethologists about animal behavior/aggression, ESPECIALLY in relation to canids...and any dog can be a great dog, with the proper care, training, and handling.  I don't see how SO many people are duped into thinking that certain breeds are oh so terrible.

Aggression is a REACTION, something always causes it such as fear aggression, food aggression, ect. I have some strong disagreement with my boyfriend's family. They are HIGHLY judgmental including with dogs. I am bewildered that they are so disgusted with me "obviously aggressive" American pit bull terrier with perfect behavior, when they literally own an Australian shepherd that attacks other dogs, livestock, and has bitten humans (but shes not aggressive because shes an aussie), a food aggressive Labrador who has snarled at humans before (but he could never be aggressive bc labs are good dogs), a mini schnauzer who has bitten a child in the face before and they have to lock her up when people come over, and THE single most aggressive dog I have ever met (if a dog could be evil, itd be this one) a Chihuahua who literally has every kind of aggression, she attacks animals, other dogs, and people without cause or reason very violently. She bit a red heeler puppy in the face for absolutely no reason (I was observing them at the time) and the heeler got spanked because "shes a good dog".

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Igloo9201 In reply to Thylacinus1 [2015-04-27 16:57:20 +0000 UTC]

Exactly; it's either a reaction to something negative, frustration, a trigger, etc.  It's not "Well, this here is a pit bull...OH IT'S OBVIOUSLY AGGRESSIVE!"

Argh, I can't imagine the amount of frustration that must cause you.  How can they be THAT ignorant when they have that many dogs who are actually aggressive??  Labs and Aussies at least are considered angelic, perfect breeds...it seems like if they have aggressive dogs of those breeds, they would realize that breed bias = BS.  Sounds like your dog is a thousand times more well-behaved and safer than their dogs.  Goodness, you need to kidnap those people and force them to go to an animal behavior seminar someday.

*Sighs*  That's ridiculous.  I know the feels, though.  There are a few people I know who think that humans are 100% the ONLY animals who can feel emotions.  Or the people who seem to think that all snakes are deadly, horrid creatures.  Don't even get me started.
"It's a ball python.  It grows to be a max of six feet, and is nonvenomous."
"I DON'T CARE, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE A PET SNAKE BECAUSE THEY'RE DANGEROUS!!!!"
"It's pretty much impossible for a ball python to kill you."
"NO IT'S DANGEROUS!"
People have told me that they've literally had ^this^ conversation with their parents.

I wasn't "allowed" to get a pet snake because my boyfriends dad (we are currently all living together because his parents are building their own home) says that all snakes are huge baby killers. He saw one report about and ANACONDA biting an unsupervised child.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Igloo9201 In reply to Thylacinus1 [2015-04-27 19:31:38 +0000 UTC]

Why is his family so stupid?!
Plus, I highly doubt that you would get a freaking anaconda.  I also doubt that you would have a baby and be like "Okay, time for the snake and the baby to have a play-date!  *Drops the child into the terrarium*"  I'm pretty sure that dogs have hurt/killed more children than snakes.  But oh, that's probably only the pit bulls! (even though you said that they themselves have a dog that BIT A CHILD)

Honestly, ANY animal + unsupervised child = bad things.  They should realize that you're smarter than that.  Although, they probably can't see past their own raging misconceptions.

There are also some people who denounce all reptiles as horrible pets because some of them carry salmonella.  If you make sure to wash your hands, it's really not that huge of an issue.  I don't see people refusing to handle raw eggs and poultry, even though those things are even more dangerous than reptiles.  But reptiles are so dangerous!

Hopefully you can get one someday (if you want one), snakes are a joy to work with.  I hope to own and breed reptiles someday.  I might even get my first bearded dragon this year.

Thylacinus1 In reply to Igloo9201 [2015-04-27 21:13:16 +0000 UTC]

Children are little terrors, they get into dangerous things and should always be supervised (and no, I wanted either a milk snake or a ball python).

I like to bring up that eating raw cookie dough is a salmonella risk as well when they bring that up. usually shuts them up. I can wash my hands after handling my bearded dragon, They INJESTED raw cookie dough.

I have had snakes in the past, MY parents aren't numbskulls, and I plan to have one or two in the future. Id love a milk snake or ball python but the only reptile I can have right now is my beardie. His little sister has aquatic turtles and they don't mind them.

Igloo9201 In reply to Thylacinus1 [2015-04-27 22:34:07 +0000 UTC]

Aah, true.  But as long as they're supervised, I can't see it being a huge, awful problem the way they think it is.

EXACTLY.  That's a really good point, I'ma start using that now.

Ahaha, I am extremely jealous.  My parents never let me have reptiles because my mom doesn't want dead mice or live crickets in the house.
It's awesome that you have a beardie, though.  I absolutely love snakes.  My favorites are indigo snakes.

Well, my beardie eats mealworms, other than that its fruits and veggies so it isn't too big a deal for them.

I love indigo snakes as well, here they are a native, protected species.

Yeah, I'm planning on feeding mine already dead crickets (they're freeze-dried and pre-gut loaded, so I'm guessing they'll be nutritious enough.  I can also give it some pellets if I must) in a vibrating bowl that tricks the lizard into thinking that they're alive.

Yep!  I actually hope to donate to the Orianne Society sometime this year; Indigos and gopher tortoises are one of their main focuses.

"Most zoos don't give a rat's ass about conservation."

Shark conservation/anti-shark finning awareness:

Bat awareness:

^All that^ was taken at the Milwaukee Zoo. There was soooo much more, including elephant awareness, rhino awareness, big cat awareness, ANYTHING that was Threatened or Endangered had it's own special "this is what's wrong, this is what we can do," sign. The above examples are what I gathered through I'd say 1/3 of the trip. I would've taken much more, but my camera died. Now, lets move on to Toledo Zoo, shall we?

Energy bragging:
tinypic.com/view.php?pic=28b8q…

Arctic awareness:

Oh, look! The zoo helped save a non big-ticket species.

And last but CERTAINLY not least, amphibian awareness:
tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2vsqb…

And unfortunately, that is all. I went to Toledo with my fellow Junior Zookeepers, and as you can imagine, they weren't too keen on waiting for me to saunter around taking pictures of signs. But they had great ape awareness, great cat awareness, elephants, birds, reptiles, amphibians...oy! And that's only two zoos there. Every zoo that I go to nowadays, I take pictures of their signage. If I end up going to Indianapolis this fall, which I hope I can as I dearly miss that zoo, I will take pictures of their signage as well.

I'm hoping that SeaWorld will improve their education regarding orcas. They do great education with their polar bears, belugas...all of that at least on their website. Their orca info is great as well, only the dorsal fin percentage is a misrepresentation. I just want them to work on getting their educators to be more consistent with the information that SeaWorld has, because the educators themselves are mostly idiots. And putting some education in the shows would be great.

SeaWorld is also dedicated to conservation. They rescue and rehabilitate thousands upon thousands of animals, and just donated $10 million to research and help conserve the Southern Residents. They really aren't bad, its just that their shows and educators need to be better, and some more signs and such would be nice.

I am more upset with their current animal care policies...what has been bugging me most is basically the issues they have with their breeding program, but besides that they seem to be doing well. After doing research into cetacean databases and seeing how they have died, I found that what a lot of anti-caps say is just a bold faced lie. As their lifespan continues to improve, and the facility improves (as all zoos do...and SeaWorld is improving, and in leaps and bounds! I can't wait for 2018!!!), it will become easier and easier for me to support it. There are some changes I would like them to make, though.
