How many goldfish can you fit in a 10 gallon?

Thehappypet In reply to Dripping-Leaf [2009-09-13 05:59:22 +0000 UTC]

How long term are you thinking? Are you ever planning to upgrade or is the ten going ot be a permanent home? Also fancy or single tail?

Dripping-Leaf In reply to Thehappypet [2009-09-13 16:27:27 +0000 UTC]

As soon as a 20 gal appears at the dump I'm gonna get it going. They are Fancy (Orandas)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thehappypet In reply to Dripping-Leaf [2009-09-14 18:12:00 +0000 UTC]

You could keep a pair of fancy goldfish comfortably in a ten for some time, up to a year or so possibly.

Sorry to bug you again, but I was wondering how many fancy goldfish can fit in a 20 gal forever

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thehappypet In reply to Dripping-Leaf [2009-09-18 03:20:46 +0000 UTC]

Assuming they live 5 years 2 maybe 3, assuming they live ten years 1 maybe 2. Goldfish are continuously growing and can live many years. While their growth slows after about 3 years and they are about 6 to 7 inches long you can see how even a single 12 inch goldfish would be crowded in a tank that is only 24" by 12".

Yep. Some dojo/weather loaches or a school of white cloud minnowscould live with them too.

You can get a few different species from petco and the golden color variety from petsmart.

Awesome! And what is all this talk about feeding goldfish peas anyway?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thehappypet In reply to Dripping-Leaf [2009-09-19 04:39:22 +0000 UTC]

It's a diet thing when you're maintaining goldfish with swim bladder problems. Fancy goldfish are already prone to having problems with their swim bladders anyways. Peas help to clear out their guts, kinda like us eating raisin bran. XD Since their swim bladders fill and empty through their gut peas can help reduce floaty or sinky problems.

Dripping-Leaf In reply to Thehappypet [2009-09-19 04:41:15 +0000 UTC]

Sweet, are mine big enough for that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thehappypet In reply to Dripping-Leaf [2009-09-19 05:40:43 +0000 UTC]

I've never had to feed them specifically peas for that reason, but I have made gel food for my fish using peas as an ingredient.
If the food item is small enough for them to be able to get it in their mouths you can give them all sorts of things.

Dripping-Leaf In reply to Thehappypet [2009-09-19 15:19:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, okay! Odd question, how exactly do know if your fish are constipated? Also have you seen the picture of Cornelius? I was wondering if his head looks normal to you, his eyes are also partially black outside the pupil (in the white part).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thehappypet In reply to Dripping-Leaf [2009-09-21 02:29:42 +0000 UTC]

From the pictures they seemed fine to me, the area outside the pupil can be many colors including black, white, silver, orange, red, or a combination. It's just color variation and it makes each goldie unique.
Goldfish with malformed swimbladders will float, or sink, as they digest food. Feeding peas can help them digest faster and regain their balance.

Dripping-Leaf In reply to Thehappypet [2009-09-24 02:40:39 +0000 UTC]

Even the red (I'm assuming it's the gill) on Cornelius's gill right plate?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thehappypet In reply to Dripping-Leaf [2009-09-24 02:54:09 +0000 UTC]

Just a natural variation you'll see in some calicos. The operculum(gill plate) is clear and the red gills below are making it look that color.

Now that you've had practice using a couple refs I bet you could create your own fish from scratch, that's when it gets really exciting.

hi there! since you're an experienced keeper, can you identify my fish's disease?

she's a platy, and unlike her other brothers and sisters in the tank, she separates herself alone, kept hiding at woods or plants. she's not pregnant, her colors are a lil bit paler, and swims a lil bit sluggishly (but she still eats.. altho comes late to the food....

i just don't know what's wrong and what to do... pleae help me! thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thehappypet In reply to EvilDarkSide [2009-05-04 06:38:24 +0000 UTC]

How old are the platies, what size tank are they kept in, and how many are there(males/females). Do you ever notice any interactions between her and the other fish in the tank? Any other odd behaviors besides the loner behavior?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EvilDarkSide In reply to Thehappypet [2009-05-04 11:14:15 +0000 UTC]

well there's not much interaction, she's quite old (adult sized) while the others are younger...
none of the males mated with her, not even the adult males...

they did'nt pick on her or harm her or anything, she just... moves away and prefers to hide...

i thought of using salt to treat her in isolated tank...

Thehappypet In reply to EvilDarkSide [2009-05-04 22:44:35 +0000 UTC]

Some fish just prefer to be alone, There may not be any individuals in the group she prefers to socialize with. Also livebearers do no have the longest lifespan so if she is a year or more old she may just be showing signs of age. Unless you see other signs of disease or illness moving her to a whole new tank and administering treatments would just add stress to the situation.
