I create and have created plenty of my own characters. I have my own sci-fi universe I intend to make something of should time finally grace me with the ability to make a web comic (I tried this before but it was far too time consuming to keep up along with other responsibilities).
I prefer drawing and following original art over fan art any day, although this has left me with very few active followers since nobody seems to be interested in original content.

Glad you share my opinion and yeah, a web comic is immensely time consuming.
Β And I wouldn't be too sure about that. You only need to know how to work your original stuff out. After all, all the fanart you see on this website has someone behind it that once created something original for a movie, series or game... and the industry is always craving for more!

Hmm... I wouldn't so easily say that the industry is craving for new ideas. The industry, especially the gaming industry, is playing it super safe while trying to make massive profit margins.
And then there's the audience, which always pay attention to stuff that's already been around for a while.
All those franchises that started out that people still follow were created back when there wasn't an abundance of franchises to begin with.
Now the only way any indie project can get recognition is if it panders to some ideology or has a big name attached to it (or if it's porn. The biggest money makers on Patreon are all porn artists

Hmmm please donβt stop, because really the opportunity of makin git out there on the Internet is much higher than in your local city. You have many more possibilities and remember, thereβs still absolute gems in the indie sector that arenβt based off of your everyday gunslinger in 1st person... look at Ori and the Blind forest, Undertale, Shovel night, they all had their influences, yes but they kept it that way, relying on original designs for gameplay, graphics and mechanics.
And all of them are relatively young compared to the series that big game developers grew a giant marketing around of

And thanks! Besides getting better I've also found better programs. I seriously reached the limits of what I could do with Gimp ages ago, then I found Krita. Damn I love that program.
