I listen to a good variety, i just havnt updated my favorite band thing in a whilee
im not a huge fan of arcade fire- but i like a bit of their songs :]

Well, what other stuff do you listen to? I'm curious. I've been listening to Arcade Fire a lot lately, and they're really good. The Mars Volta, as I've shared quite openly, is my all-time favorite band so far. It's imperative that the music I listen to isn't boring!

Boring, good, and...well I haven't really heard the Beatles. Why do you like Paramore? I like the Killers because the vocalist is good, I like the fat beats, and the keyboard effects sound awesome.

I like paramore because of Hayley Williams rocker voice and its just an upbeat band. I like the lyrics and stuff

OK, but I listen to upbeat bands all the time. Is there anything you can tell me about Paramore's time signatures, guitar/bass riffs, instrumentation, melodies, tempo changes, or breakdowns? I listened to some of their top tracks, and all I got out of all of them was an average singer and drummer over a bunch of distorted guitar chords; her voice provided some musical quality and the rest was just noisy. I could write a paragraph about any single song by The Mars Volta, Arcade Fire, MGMT or even The Killers explaining what I heard, but as for Paramore, I couldn't even write three sentences collectively about everything they've released because it all sounds the same.

Don't get me wrong; I'm only trying to get you to actively think about what you're listening to, rather than simply pouring it into your head.

i mean some of their top tracks are very commercialized but i wrote a 5 page essay for my english class on a thesis about a song of theirs. I dont know much about chords or anything but I can just sit on a field and listen to them, just the instrumentals. I dont know much about Arcade fire, but It's just noise to me

Well I listened to a few others as well. Writing about an existing thesis is much different from actively listening to something and describing the music in and of itself. I'm a drummer so I don't know a whole lot about music, other than what I picked up, but I've been influenced by my band's guitar player to look into some different sounding groups, and I came to realize that I was looking at all the wrong things when I thought a band was good. And I only used Arcade Fire as an example; you should try listening to their song "Sprawl II" as it is much more melodic and they have many other different sounding songs on "The Suburbs." In addition, check out Pinback, MGMT, Radiohead, and if you're up to it, The Mars Volta.
