Hi Sakai,
how i design and model:
1. Start with the brief and let the form grow out of the function. Start from the inside and design out.
2. I design the form and spaces in my head and scribble down anything and everything. I might go through an entire sketch book before turning the computer on. The sketches are rarely pretty at this point.
3. I sometimes use photoshop (with a wacom tablet) or ink on paper to paint the building/bridge in context ofits surroundings. This is a very quick and effective way to express the materiality, colours and atmosphere you intend to create.
4. I then turn to 3ds max (some prefer sketchup), what ever you're quickest in and is easiest to edit and change. Sketch up is generally quicker but 3ds max is more free form and easier to eidt. I use this as a design tool and keep working it till its right.
5. Then i take either section lines and renders and start to CAD up in autocad or microstation.
This is my general process for designing for competitions or university work. Not had very much experience on real projects at this stage.
Look on the web for tutorials on any aspect of modelling and visualisation. This is how i learned.
