June 25th - 26th 2005, New York City, New York

The Graffiti Hall of Fame was founded by Ray Rodriguez, a community-minded man known to his neighbors and friends as Sting Ray. In 1980, Sting Ray initiated the project in conjunction with such artists as Dez , Part, Due 2, Vulcan, Skeme, and Daze. Sting Ray, who spent years involved in community activism, was an art zealot who saw the creation of the Graffiti Hall of Fame as a combination of his appreciation for the street art and his desire to help youths find a constructive medium through which to showcase their talent. Located on 106th Street and Park Avenue in Spanish Harlem, the Graffiti Hall of Fame consists of murals circumscribing the yard of Junior High School 13 (Jackie Robinson Educational Complex). The artwork exhibited on these walls is visible to neighborhood residents and can be admired by those driving through the area, providing them with a taste for the community’s colorful disposition.

In its early years, the Graffiti Hall of Fame was an exclusive space that was only accessible to esteemed subway artists who had gained the respect of their peers within New York City’s artistic community. The most remarkable aspect of the Graffiti Hall of Fame’s participants was that they were extremely young artists with no formal training, only a deep yearning for self-expression. As time passed, the Graffiti Hall of Fame became a veritable Mecca for the city’s street artists. In the present time, aerosol artists from around the world traveled to New York with the hopes of having the opportunity to paint in the Graffiti Hall of Fame. The space earned such status within the global artistic community that it spawned the birth of numerous “Graffiti Hall of Fame” in other cities throughout the world.

This thriving artistic space has caught the eye of such major publications as El Diario, The New York Times, The New York Post, Village Voice, and Source magazine; the artwork exhibited on these walls was also showcased in such films and TV shows as Style Wars, “Yo MTV Raps”, and “New York Undercover”, Hip Hop Immortals, and various movies and music videos. Such artists as Part, Dez, Due 2, Skeme, Daze, Vulcan, Jean 13, Futura 2000, Kano, Case 2, Butch 2, Panic, Noc167, Bear 167, AOne, Toxic, Cose, Joey, Delta 2, Sharp, Darism, Spon, Chain 3, Crash, Daze, T-Kid, Seen UA, TC- 5, TATS Cru, FC, Zephyr, Revolt, COD, CIA, James Top, Kel1st, Mare 139, Shock 123 TVS, Baby 168, Poke IBM, Koze, Cope 2, Stay High 149 and many more have left their marks on the Graffiti Hall of Fame’s walls and continue to do so years after entering the art gallery circuit, delving into the music and fashion businesses, and gaining worldwide recognition on their various works. Every year, different generations of innovative and talented graffiti artist from around the world gather at the Graffiti Hall of Fame. This year, this communal event will mark the 26th Anniversary of the Graffiti Hall of Fame.

For the past several years, this annual event has been organized by New York based artist Joey, Wane (Writer’s Bench), Mo (Monoes Promotions), Street’s are Saying Things, Doc of TC5, and DJ Grand Master Soe. The students of the Jackie Robinson Educational Complex (JH 13) at 106th Street and Park Avenue and people from all walks of life continue to be inspiration behind this monumental event.
