I'd pull a "what am I becoming squeeing at cute little goats kids whatever pfft what is this" line, but I ain't even sorry. Also Booth bickering with his swap-self is just so personal and immature-serious it makes me smirk-giggle smirkle yes.

It's just so...cute. The kid even looks like it's grinning and it looks so happy hopping there like it's happy and cute and ajdfkdggbkhklhrkhrkCUTE But pffff. The two of them are probably just ripe for argument/bickering/less-than-friendly conversation, huh? I presume Booth wouldn't approve of his swap-self?

I swear, at this stage I'm just going to forgo the whole education game for the sake of whisking myself off down the country to raise a farm of goats, fainting and otherwise. 9___9 Well, yes - but to an equal extent his swap-self wouldn't approve of the way he carries on, either. There's be a certain shame for having a counterpart like that on both sides as well as a pressure to prove that the way they're doing things is the right way. The fact of the matter is, neither of them is entirely happy with anything so the conversation as a whole is a bit of a bluff.

sjdfg and now I must go off and resort to mobile.

yeah, it's a bar called Monkey Wrench.
it is slightly less dreadful than most bars in town, if you're a teetotaler like me.
in that there is plenty of elbow room, there is an out of tune piano in the corner, the TVs are modestly sized and behind the bar where i dont have to look. well, one of them is right over the piano so i can play piano while i watch basketball, which is a rare treat, i must say!
i think the upstairs is lesbian VIP, but i'm no sure.
my roommate plays there every so often; the stage area is really good but they never have good shows.
and most interesting to you, there is Hunter S Thompson/ Ralph Steadman inspired art all over the place!

Olo-Doorbell In reply to thuggiardo [2012-01-08 01:26:53 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like a nice place. I haven't been to many bars, but the cramped ones are always the worst. It's all elbows and people brushing past you on the way to the bathroom and the smell of old beer everywhere. Ergh. The Ralph Steadman art sounds like it'd be fun, though...God knows what it looks like to a drunk person, but I haven't seen a Ralph Steadman/Hunter S. Thompson-inspired artwork that wasn't interesting to look at.

it's pretty alright, most of it

what other authors do you like?
last year i read like 10 or 11 Philip K Dick novels!
just finished Western Lands by William S Burroughs

when i was reading your piece, i wasnt aware that i was reading something on a free website, ya know? it might as well have been the work of any writer i like. you definitely have that command of the language
have you been published anywhere?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Olo-Doorbell In reply to thuggiardo [2012-01-08 01:52:26 +0000 UTC]

It sounds it.

I'm a terrible, terrible fan of Chuck Palahnuik, Philip Pullman, and China Meiville (the latter rtheir ideas, not their writing per se), but Philip K. Dick is amazing. His stuff really opened me up to the idea of transgressive fiction. Western Lands...I think I read some of it, but I remember not really liking it for stylistic reasons.

Haha - you flatter me, really you do. I just write down what comes to mind...and as much as I'd like the idea of being published, I've never really been published anywhere. It seems almost...self-indulgent.

thuggiardo In reply to Olo-Doorbell [2012-01-08 04:01:01 +0000 UTC]

i dont even know how one goes about getting published.

i am mainly a musician, that makes sense. you write a song, you play it for someone. someone records it, someone puts the recording on vinyl/cd/whatever and sells it.

but for writers, what do you do? do you have to send samples to people or something? i think i might write more if i knew what to do next. i have a terrible habit of thinking several steps ahead.

like, i am a bit of a hoarder, but once, someone asked me to be in an art show, and it was a group show with lots of people but i was in the big room with just one other person.
so inspired by that, i made this [link] out of all the stuff i had around in my tiny room in my parents' mobile home, haha

so i cant really do anything until i at least know what might happen next.

do you think it is better to just do?

if i find out how authors get published, i will let you know. i am facebook friends with author Patrick Wensink... there i just sent him a message. we'll see what he says.

I've never been able to compose/write music, so you have my definite respect. How exactly does one go about...making a song? That's the part I never quite got - writing lyrics is one thing, but how do you actually make the music to go with them?

I'm really not quite sure...I know of some people that write stories/novellas for people and make money that way, almost like commissions for artists, but that's not really the usual way to do it. I think you'd have to walk in with some completed works and try to sell them to a publisher/magazine/etc., depending on the length. Personally, I find that I can't write something with the intent of someone reading it - it turns out okay, but not as good as something that I suddenly just sit down and write off the top of my head.

Ooh - thankee much. I've been looking halfheartedly at methods of publishing for a while - I know at least one person who published a book by themselves, but that's really not the best way of going about it. You don't get much of a reading base that way.

songwriting happens in a lot of different ways. i think there are even two types of music/music brains... there are rhythm people and there are um, singer people.
obviously, there is much crossover. there is usually crossover except in things like maybe scat singing, rap or maybe even yodeling where the voice is more athletic, like, challenging the rhythm to a contest of endurance.
so songwriting is either geared toward the rhythm of the body or the rhythm of the instrument. some instruments seem to resonate with the human voice stronger, the guitar i guess, i mean things like the length of decay of the tone...
anyway
so when i have written songs with words, well early on i would have a certain rhythm, i think 90% of songs are written this way, i had an acoustic guitar, i am going to strum this pattern and the words will fall here, and then i write the words
or i write the words with a certain pattern and then figure out the best way to strum the guitar.
but i didnt do anything with these guitar songs, haha
i never even recorded them, i probably still have the lyrics somewhere, i was 19, the fuck does a suburban 19 year old have to sing about, haha

i write songs in bands now, [link]
the singer is a real singer, an opera singer. it was thru working with her that i decided that singers are different musicians. i think french music is like this as well, where the rhythm of the song is close to the rhythm of the singer breathing in and out.
as i write this i am listening to radiohead and Thom Yorke is definitely a singer's singer.
singer's ideas sound to me like trying to direct sand as it freely falls from a slit baggy, the melody is like the intended pattern of piles of sand.

another way to visualize it is this, rhythm is vertical, singing is horizontal.

so a song covers two dimension and then i guess the lyrical content gives it the 3rd dimension.
but a melody can be lyrical, i have heard an entire monologue listening to Ornette Coleman before i realized he was playing saxophone. i wish i had written down what i heard him say, but it was plain as words. crazy! (i dont do drugs/drink of any kind, haha)

what do you think?

maybe you want to try to make a song together?
[link] this is as far as i have gotten with this one, for example.
but i can give you one with a melody in place if you like.
and i will work from your lyrics if you like.
i usually let Dane write her own lyrics to my melodies. well, probably half the time. the link above, i wrote Hummingbird on that record, she wrote the words. she wrote all of the other songs/lyrics.

"If you're writing fiction or poetry, publishers want to see the finished product first. They most likely won't look at stuff that's only half-done, etc.

So, to get things published, say with an independent press, usually their website has submission guidelines. I'd check out books you like and see who publishes them and then find that press' website.

Bigger New York publishers will always require an agent to do the contacting. Some bigger indie presses do too. Pick up a book like THE WRITER'S MARKET at the library. They usually do a good job of telling you how to approach an agent and list most agents."
