# About me
This group is dedicated to the silent movie Metropolis made in 1927. Metropolis is German expressionist film in the science fiction genre directed by Fritz Lang.It is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and makes use of a science-fiction context to explore a political theme of the day: the social crisis between workers and owners in capitalism. The most expensive silent film ever made, it cost approximately 5 million Reichsmark.
It has been said that this was the direct inspiration for numerous landmark films and ideas afterwards such as Blade Runner, Terminator, the Frankenstein films (which use similiar equipment to that seen in Rotwang's lab) and also pioneered many cinematic effects such as miniature sets with the use of mirrors to place people within them. An effect used soon after by Alfred Hitchcock. Also the methods used to create the Maschinenmensch, or Machine-Man were revolutionary to the time.
Basically, this is a true work of art and also a timeless one. And one with a thrilling story not only in film but also surrounding it and I for one think it deserves a fan club here.

Hey, in case you guys are interested, I did a review of Metropolis where I compared it to the 2001 anime remake. Here's the link if you want to see it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU-Up9…

Thanks. I'll check it out. However, the anime wasn't a remake according to the creator. Just FYI

I knew that and actually mentioned that at one point in my review, but stated afterwards that the movies' plots are too similar for it not to be a remake.

For anyone that's interested BFI London are screening Metropolis newly restored with 25 minutes of the lost footage never seen before. It should be happening from the 19th-30th of November and continuing in December.

I am so annoyed there is still no release date for the DVD here in australia, i can only assume its not far off as the DVD sites are offering the 2002 version for $19.95. Ive seen a german titled version from the live TV broadcast and the new footage is great.

Thanks for the invite . Even though I don't think I can do some Metropolis stuff in the near future (or ever ..) , I'm glad I can see some stuff related to the movie~

No problem. Having Metropolis related works isn't a requirement, just being a fan is.

To whosoever began this group: Hey, thanks for the invitation. Frankly, I thought I was alone in my adoration of the silent film era. Most folk look at me like I'm nuts when I mention Metropolis. Well, anyway, thanks again.

I know the feeling. That's why I started this. I'm delighted I did. I nagged my girlfriend until she watch the film and now she's a member here too. Anyways, you're very welcome to the group.

Hi, are you accepting any more members. I'm a big German Expressionism and sci-fi dystopian fan. My work is mostly on those kinds of themes.

Might you be accepting general sci fi images at any time? I have someone on my watch list who does some wonderful cyborg/robotic manips .. just a thought

LukeQuietus In reply to Gild-a-Lily [2010-03-13 12:25:19 +0000 UTC]
Yeah that's an idea. Any ideas on what I could call the collection?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Gild-a-Lily In reply to LukeQuietus [2010-03-13 21:54:09 +0000 UTC]
I think it rather depends on how general (or not) you want the gallery to be. Maybe you could start with CYBORGS and then if that proves a popular idea, perhaps add more galleries later ... or sumfing

LukeQuietus In reply to Gild-a-Lily [2010-03-14 00:34:21 +0000 UTC]
It shall be done. I think starting with cyborgs is a good idea.

I see you've made a gallery, but it's not possible to submit ~ you need to change the settings because they default to "no-one can submit"

LukeQuietus In reply to Gild-a-Lily [2010-03-15 00:20:52 +0000 UTC]
Ok. I fixed it (I hope). I'd set up the main features gallery but non of the others I'd created myself. I've set it so all submissions from members to these galleries require 2 votes (just so nothing completely inappropriate gets submitted). Anyways, if you have any questions on how things are set up now I updated the "Group Policies and Rules" on the homepage to include the latest changes.

That means you'll have to vote twice, since you're the only admin person
I had a stock group for a while, and I know the settings are really fiddly and complicated. I've handed my group over to someone else now

LukeQuietus In reply to Gild-a-Lily [2010-03-15 21:30:00 +0000 UTC]
Aaaaaah. So it's only admins that vote. Christ it's all cloak and dagger! Why doesn't it say that somewhere?? Even the help section doesn't go through the real inner workings of the new admin stuff. It just gives a very undetailed overview of what they are. I really want to start another group but I just know This group would suffer.

Oh crap. I fiddledaround with it today cuz I'd also blocked everyone from joining. Duuuh. I'm still baffled by the way they have it all. It have little descriptions to help.

cool idea. i watch metropolis on the last sunday of every month and have done since 1984 (you do the math) i dont do much work based on the film but i am a huge fan of it and other fritz lang works. cant wait for the re constructed version to come out, all that missing footage, wonder if any more is out there

LukeQuietus In reply to dodoexpress [2010-03-10 14:19:43 +0000 UTC]
I did the math. Thats 302 times (303 at the end of this month) if you started in January of 1984. I've seen it maybe 10 - 15 times since a year ago. Excellent film. I watched Futura's transformation again yesterday. It's sooo good still. And vidoe call from Grot to Joh Freserson made my draw drop the first time I watched it. How did they even think of it never mind put it on film back then?

Yeah that sounds great! Originally when I set this up and was thinking about the future when we got a few members and needed extra people on board you were the first one I thought of but I figured you'd be quite busy with your own stock account and the contests feature you do. I'm managing pretty good for now though thankfully. Working on another pic and researching this 2010 restoration dvd and the dreadful news there might be a remake happening. Yuk!
I have a feeling once this DVD comes out in April we could see more traffc. Hopefully.

Any hoo that's where I was able to get my references for my Metropolis sketch
