From what I originally gathered it was supposed to be "Matthew" but I might had gotten it wrong.

Oh, that's what it is! Left-to-right then top-to-bottom reads roughly "Mashuu", which is as close a rendition of "Matthew" as possible in Japanese. So you're totally right. 
Foreign names are normally written in katakana though.
