Yeah, I'm not as practiced with paintings...I need to get better at painting and sketching. Photography I'm learning as well, but it's easier to practice with that.

The story is about a tourist plane that crashes from a sudden sandstorm in the middle of the desert, and they find that the sandstorm was neither natural nor random...

Well, that's the best thing to do is learn from another photographer. Research is fun, but doing that alone can be kind of frustrating, especially when going over new material. What kind of camera do you have?
