The hammer finish on your helmet pieces is usually referred to as 'planishing' or a 'planashed finish' in English.

The two Spangenhelms remind me of the work of Kirby Wise, an old friend of mine in Arizona.

Thanks! I'm aware of the "planishing" name. But planishing is not necessarilly a way of polishing, only certainly a way of making the surface more regular. "Hammer polishing" is closer to what I meant, since not only I made the piece "plain", but also gave it a polished look. More so since I specially highly polished my planishing hammer with this intention in mind.

This kind of work seems a lot more common in the US than around here heheh regards to your friend in Arizona!

Man! You are worth watching! Really admire your work and I'm totally gonna learn how to emboss like that! I just love embossed metal!
I sure would apreciate A LOT if you could give me some pointers in embossing. Do you use repousè techniques with pitch or just the stakes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimeTurbine In reply to GiuArmours [2011-11-13 18:58:51 +0000 UTC]

I apologize for taking so long to get back to you!!!! Work at the gym has been a little crazy recently and I've finally had a chance to get back into the shop. My biggest pointer is to push things as far as you can: stretching the metal and what you can do in it. That way you'll learn your breaking points and will be able to spot cracks/when to anneal early. All metals are different so you'll want to do this with a few different kinds. For embossing: Dish out from the back/raise up from the front your Highest points in your composition SO THAT when you draw on what your dishing in all you have to do is chase down, thus, allowing you to continue working from just one side. But remember your the master of your project, if it calls for some more work from the back, then do it to it. I don't use pitch yet because i like working cold (saves money/and its the process I've become used to over the years). But feel free to experiment! I use wood stumps to dish into, and lead fishing weights as a resist when I use stakes from the top.
Hope that answers some questions

It does help a lot! Thanks a bunch for sharing this!
It's so precious to be able to talk to you after so much time admiring your work!

I'm just not shure how you use the lead weights. Do you melt them and pour on the back of the piece? I've seen an armourer do this once, but I'm quite afraid of using molten lead...

TimeTurbine In reply to GiuArmours [2011-11-15 16:15:21 +0000 UTC]

thanks so much for the complements!!! and no! no molten lead! i use the round lead ball and just sit it down in a dishing stump so it will stay put, then put the piece i am working on over it. Keep it simple

Ah! I see! hhehehe thanks a bunch again!
I've already tryied some techniques around all this, and I do think I'm in the right path now. Maybe someday I'll be able to make things like you!

Legal! Boa sorte com tudo aí! Balls to the wall!

Por enquanto isso não é necessário. Estou vendendo minhas peças antes mesmo de tê-las terminado. Quando eu tiver um estoque e precisar vazar ele daí sim vou considerar algo assim. Mas quissá já vou ter uma loja virtual.
