What makes me think I have a chance? A chance for exactly what? Fame and /or fortune?
If I paint with commitment, not to art, but to a subject, with a devotional attitude anything can happen. In 1969, for example, I painted Leonard Cohen. I showed it to my boss, a gallery owner, who said it was well painted. He put it for sale into the store's front window. One day I saw Leonard Cohen on the sidewalk out in front, looking at my picture of him. I shortly after, found him up the street, introduced myself, and he bought the painting. It's like a case of the right picture winding up in the right place. Despite the millions of other artists, I can find my place by being exactly who I am. What that place may be is not only up to me, but it's the best place for me, and " I" am the formula for this 'effect'. I am technically a nobody today at the age of 61, but I'd give a lot of money, if I had it, to purchase the lot of unsold art that I have made. Maybe we just paint prayers- maybe the rest is up to the God that unites us all.
