Hey, I'm reading Ryan North's "Romeo and/or Juliet" right now, and I believe you once mentioned that you taught some Shakespeare to high school kids.  Are you familiar with this piece of work?  Because, while it is stupid and hilarious, I think it is occasionally insightful, and perhaps even helpful in putting things into a truly modern framework.

Although, I must say, my favorite phrase comes from when Romeo crashed the Capulet party and was cruising the dance floor (on the lookout for babes to help him forget about Rosaline) to the "crushing beats of a block-rocking mandolin and harpsichord ensemble."

Anyway, if haven't heard, it's a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure "Romeo and Juliet" with much of the actual poetry and dialog lifted directly from Shakespeare, and it's awesome.

I do teach Shakespeare.  A lot.  I am not familiar with that book, but it sounds pretty entertaining.  I don't really teach R&J much, but I am all for anything that infuses some hip, happ'nin' fun into the bard.

My daughter and I did some read out loud to each other stuff from that book, and it made us laugh pretty hard.

We saw St. Louis Shakespeare in the Park in Forest Park's "Romeo and Juliet" last year.  My daughter has seen maybe 8 plays by Shakespeare there, now, so she's WAY ahead of me at her age, but I didn't have me as a parent.  Anyhow, the R&J we saw on stage last year did this sort of... weird mash up with themes from "West Side Story," and modern hip-hop... er... crap... and the Montagues were more of a sort of... confederacy of gangstas or some such nonsense, and it was the first interpretation of the play that made me feel relief when Mercutio was killed.  I suppose that makes me a racist.  But I was seriously thinking, "It's about time somebody put that bastard down for his dirt nap.  Whew."  I don't think reminding white folks that their impressions of most black people is "thugs" is the best way to create unity.  But I'm old fashioned that way.

I am generally kind of 'meh' when it comes to modern reinterpretations of Shakespeare - or any classic works of the past.  Every once in while (very rarely) they can be brilliant and enlightening and can re-contextualize a work in a fascinating way.  But most of the time they're terribly off the mark and entirely miss the point of the original.
