Dear Shane Fenton,
As soon as I found your page, I immediately developed a love-hate feeling about your work, and by extension, you. I also struggled with some self-worth angst. I wanted to post pictures of my recipes, but now that I've seen what you've done here, I am compelled to meet the bar you've raised.
I was just going to make a couple recipes and snap pics with a phone. Now I'm setting up lighting and staging, digging my spritzer out of storage, and agonizing about color choices and finding more photogenic plates and bowls, and making camera decisions. Thanks for motivating me without even knowing me.

Food is such a beautiful subject, it provides all the colour, texture and shape (well that is until we humans butcher it) Β I'm happy to set the bar and for anyone to match it, go forth and cook, create beautiful imagery and remember, you will not master it straight away, don't get discouraged, like anything worth doing, you have to earn it.

Georges do it even cheaper and they have 2 years warranty (I think so anyway) and you can force the price down more if you have the skill.

I mean he lens you have selected is ok with the camera, and the place (georges) is great, they are alot cheaper than JB I assure you.
If you want help with purchasing the camera than I can come in with you but its more of you deciding what you want before then, if you are confident in this being the camera for you than Georges is the next stop.
If you cannot wait for me to go with you (which is understandable from excitement) than ask what the cheapest price is for the camera with the lens, make sure you go in there knowing atleast the basic specs about the camera and work them hard on price, remember, the harder you work the more money you save.
Additionally, DO NOT get convinced into buying bags, sd cards, extra batteries or any of the other shit, you can get that way cheaper in other places.

well what are you stuck on?
It seems like you had it ready to go and now you are lost again.
best way to explain it is, what are your needs as a photographer, what is it you want to do with the camera, these are all important factors in you purchasing one.
not to mention lens choice and accessories.

i admittedly went in too blindly
and i thought that place in north sydney had a store front (I'm so smart...)
what I require of a camera is something that has better quality than what i use now (supanova photo's came out totally shit this year), with a good shutter speed (figured the faster the shutter speed, the less blurry it would get and help my slightly shakey hands and help with motion pictures)
as for lens, i do not know. i wish to continue with the nature photography i do as well as still life, but i wish to try more with people and portraits as well and action photography (anything with movement)
I'm going in really blindly now
I have a dentist appointment in the city on the 22nd of this month
maybe I'll go camera hunting then

Well then I still believe that the D3200 with the 18-55mm lens is a good start point for you.
With that being said there will be some sacrifices, with this lens you will get nice nature and portrait images, the shutter speed in a camera function so thats not important with the lens.
You will have issues with high speed/action images and forget anything in the dark or poorly lit places cause the lens will not cope.
You can get great low light lenses but they are expensive, more than your budget i fear.
When it comes down to it, let me know a few days before the 22nd, let me know your max cash for the camera/accessories and I will piece you together the best package humanly possible.
understand, becoming a photographer is not something you can rush into, I know you want to snap like mad but you have to learn and understand your camera and how shots are taken, once you become comfortable you upgrade lenses, then a new body, then more lenses, etc etc.
This is an investment into creativity, you must learn to crawl before you can walk my friend!
...and I assure you, it's so very very worth it!
