Thanks! I doubt the screen would taste good but if you ever get to San Antonio, I'll be glad to make you some cupcakes! They really do taste as good as they look.

They ate it I would have been insulted if they didn't. That was the first big cake I made for anyone who wasn't my relative and I was so nervous that I went home with a migraine, even though we were invited to the party. So I didn't see the cake being cut. But the lady I made it for said they liked it, and they had leftovers.

Awesome 3-d scuplting with the cakes! The boobies are hella cool but that "Shark Attack" is off the hook! (OH! I made a pun. Such a geek).

Thanks! The shark cake was a little outside of my comfort zone...I guess you could say I'm more familiar with boobies than sharks so I'm glad it turned out as well as it did.

I don't know why you don't get more comments and favorites, your cakes are absolutely amazing. [: I'm the resident cake maker in my house, and all I do is mix together a boxed cake with some store bought frosting! I wish I could make creative things like you. ;]

Thanks! I started with box mix and store bought frosting too...I think everyone does. My most popular cake flavor actually starts with a box of white cake mix, then you add things to it until it's a dense, moist cake that doesn't resemble the original box mix in any way.
I didn't really get into making cool cakes until I quit working to stay home with my kids. Then I needed a hobby, and what could be better than a hobby everyone could eat?

Yeah, I suppose that is where everyone starts. I've made two homemade cakes so far, one starting from a box cake, and both were basically disasters while making them, but tasted great, so does the process really matter? I think not.
I suppose I'll have more time and money for cooking and baking when I'm not living with my parents going to college with no income, though. ;]3

I'm sure you will. It's much easier to do your own thing in your own kitchen. I never did anything more than basic cakes when I lived in my parents' house. Then again, I got married when I was 18 :d
Now when I go visit and try to bake something at my mom's house, I can't stand it because she doesn't have any of the right tools. I'll be sitting there going, "How can anyone not own a pastry blender?" while my husband laughs at me.
My favorite doctored cake mix recipe is the White Almond Sour Cream one that you can find lots of places on the web. There are two variations, I use the one with the oil. The only thing I do differently is that I usually put whole eggs in instead of the whites, and I replace part of the water with liquor or flavored coffee creamers.

Lol well, I'm a lazy 20 bumming a place to live off my parents still, and I'll probably be here for a while. ;] My mom tries to appease my culinary adventures, but we simply can't always afford everything homemade recipes call for. Regardless, I somehow manage to be the only one in the household who cooks anything that everyone will eat.
And yeah, we are seriously lacking in tools. All of our pots/pans/anything are incredibly old and worn and are difficult to work with. I'm always amazed by the utensils some of my friends have in their kitchens. Always contemplating "borrowing" them.
And I looked it up and it sounds great and is fairly simple, pretty basic ingredients. I'll have to give it a try, I'm sure my mom would love it. [:

Don't feel bad about your pans and tools...I wanted my mixer for 10 years before I bought it (and I named her Sally, she's practically a family member). If you have Ross in your area, that's a good place to get quality pans without paying a ton...and if you have Hobby Lobby and want cake decorating stuff, they put coupons on their website every week. Every few months they do one that's 40% off all Wilton products.
But you probably shouldn't buy nice pans until you have your own place, or your mom will keep them when you move out.

Well, I will try to remember that! Not sure if we have those places here, but maybe sooomewhere around here. [: But, probably wont happen anytime too soon. If anyone did buy new kitchenware it'd have to be my mom, since I don't have any money and wont any time soon.. So, it would technically be hers anyway. And she isn't going to have money to give me for crappy vending machine lunch at the college, soooo all those exciting kitchen things I'd like, like a double boiler, for one, will haaaave to wait.

Hi! I found you work through your sis' profile and wandered my way over here. =] I wanted to tell you, I completed the Le Cordon Bleu culinary program in Chicago some years back, and it is when I see wonderful designs and work like yours that I wish I had gone for pΓ’tisserie instead.
Your work is beautiful! Keep it up. =]
take care,

That wasn't one of my better cakes...but not too terrible considering I had a broken leg when I made it. I had such big plans for her birthday cake, though...

Thanks very much! The icing seemed a little dry and in places it sucked up the dye causing it to bleed. What is glycerin? can you mix it in with icing?
π: 0 β©: 1
DarkMindsEye In reply to knotty-inks [2009-05-25 14:06:36 +0000 UTC]
Glycerin is one of the ingredients in the food coloring. It's the part that makes it runny. You can mix glycerin with fondant...too much and it will make the fondant sticky. You can thin paste or gel food colorings with vodka and they are more likely to dry on a cake. On your particular cake though, anywhere that the color might have bled just looks like intentional shading...you're the only one who knows if there were any spots you didn't intend to shade that way. Cake is not an exact medium and part of decorating cakes is having ways to cover up the unplanned...the fondant designs that are so popular right now...stripes, dots, ball border, ribbon border, are popular because they are good for covering mistakes in fondant. If you ever see a decoration that seems out of place...a bow or flower where it doesn't make any sense...chances are, it's hiding a flaw in the cake.
