Welcome to the Avenger, Commander.

This video brings up a few interesting things; for one, the genders of the head scientist and chief engineer have been switched-- Dr. Vahlen is no longer present, and is replaced with Dr Richard Tygan ( I wouldn't know the spelling if it wasn't for TV Tropes ). He's apparently an ex-ADVENT scientist. And then there's Lily Shen-- Dr. Shen's daughter. Apparently, Dr. Shen is no longer with us...

Also, the commander was apparently in some sort of stasis 'suit' prior to the events of the game, thanks to the aliens, with some sort of chip installed in them. And, it's possible, I think, that the commander for XCOM 2 is the same one from Enemy Unknown, but I'm not sure...

Also, the extent at which soldiers and their weapons can be customised is impressive, to. I'm looking forward to (hopefully) get my hands on this.

www.gamespot.com/articles/xcom…
Oh, and Chryssalids are back, and look and sound even more terrifying than before. They're a little more brittle, but every attack they make poisons a unit, and if that unit dies while poisoned, they become a cocoon, and if not destroyed, well... Think the dead whale from Enemy Within, but on a smaller scale. They can multiply faster. Oh, and they can conceal themselves, so one can never be sure when all the Chryssalids are actually dead. Yay.

Cryokina In reply to LukeMCFC141 [2015-08-22 16:00:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, we may as well just give up now, then. Fucking burrowing Chryssalids, smarter Mutons, bigger Sectoids... There's probably any number of terrifying units we haven't even seen yet. I'd bet anything we'll face some kind of enhanced Sectopod late in the campaign, and there'll definitely be a new Ethereal. I'm hoping there's news soon on how our soldiers can be upgraded, because we're looking seriously outgunned here.

I'm pretty certain that the Commander is meant to be the same as the one from Enemy Unknown; otherwise, the Councilman saying "Welcome back, Commander" is kinda unnecessary. Shen's death saddens me, but now I'm worried about Vahlen. I have a terrible feeling that she's working with the enemy.

LukeMCFC141 In reply to Cryokina [2015-08-22 19:37:28 +0000 UTC]

At least, from what I can tell, the zombies are gone, and I'm fairly certain that the ADVENT troops are said to be 2's variant of EU's Sectoids, so the first missions should be somewhat easy. Well, as easy as XCOM can get, that is.
But, yeah, I'm calling it-- these 'Elders' that have been mentioned are Ethereals, and maybe the Uber Ethereal is still alive and kicking after 20 years.

I'm just confused by this 'stasis suit' business-- it was specifically stated as a suit, and the commander did have a chip in their lobe as well. I'm guessing the aliens never forgot about XCOM, and perhaps took their commander hostage, planning to have him/her work for them if XCOM resurfaced. I'm just glad XCOM got there first if that's the case.

Vahlen... Worst case scenario, she's working for ADVENT and the alien bastards, but I'm hoping that she's being forced into doing so against her will, as that'll mean she probably didn't pull a Face-Heel Turn during the time gap. Either she's alive and retired/in hiding, dead, with ADVENT... or completely written out of the story altogether, which would be lame.
And, for some weird reason, I think ADVENT was mainly formed from EXALT. It'd make sense.

But what happened to his glorious sweater? The aliens will pay for ruining his wardrobe, mark my words... It's a shame it's not the same voice actor, but I guess he is twenty years older.

I'm quite nervous about those new enemies in the same video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LVN3g… I mean, Christ, we are not equipped to fight that kind of stuff. There'd better be some big guns you can research later in the game.

Thanks for thinking of me, and yes, we do indeed have work to do. All the excitement about the trailer is making me want to write some more military sci-fi.

Ah, the season of video game announcements is upon us. First XCOM 2, now Fallout 4... What will be next?

Happy Birthday, hope it's awesome and filled with epic gifts of a badass nature. Or if not that then hopefully it's stress free.

Also I started reading your XCOM series and I must say as someone who had no prior interest in XCOM in general I found it to be extremely interesting. Now I have to look up some let's plays.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cryokina In reply to Emeclipse [2015-05-16 21:36:07 +0000 UTC]

It was good, though sadly not stress-free. My exams only finished today. I obtained a great treasure, a massive Lego Helicarrier, that took me a total of eight hours of building to finish. It's gigantic and I regret nothing. Trying to get myself back into the rhythm of writing right now, as I haven't had any time for it recently. Been trying to ingest a lot of epic fantasy to fuel Minecraft stuff; I've learned a decent amount about tactical manoeuvres from Warhammer novels.

I do enjoy XCOM a great deal, but it's a very difficult thing to write. I do a ton of research into the maps, the locations, the people, the weather, and then I have to plan out the research and the construction, as well as trying to figure out character development for a dozen different characters. It's very satisfying when it's done, but it takes a lot of effort, so it's on the back burner right now.

I feel you when it comes to exams, mine aren't for a another week and I'm finishing up final projects and papers. Well I'm glad you got something cool, sounds like you really enjoyed it I'm still working on outlines and plot lines with my story, coming up with characters is easy, but coming up with a story is hard. But what I'm reading right now is some H.P. Lovecraft Shadow over Innsmouth. I don't read a lot of horror or science fiction but I'm liking it quite a bit.

Well the work you does shine through, the characters are really well written. The pacing and action scenes are really good too.

I've seen the Bionicle reboot episodes and I have learned three things:
1. Onua looks hilarious in toy-form
2. I don't understand foreign languages
3. It is very cool

I'm brewing headcanons on what they'll do after their first adventure as we speak!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cryokina In reply to LRpaul [2015-03-09 20:40:01 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a big fan of the whole "let's only use one voice actor!" thing, but aside from that I'm fairly happy with the episodes. The animation style, as I hoped, is reminiscent of Samurai Jack, and it's doing a good job of showing the island while not going overboard with the worldbuilding the way the last couple of years of story did. I think Okoto feels a bit lifeless, though. We need to see the villages, get a taste of the island's wildlife, stuff like that. That's where the headcanons come in.

Yeah, so far it seems that the Skull spiders have wiped-out most of the life on it

...and then the Toa took out their leader in, like, a minute.

Oh well, back to picturing them doing things based on their previous incarnations

Cryokina In reply to LRpaul [2015-03-09 21:59:46 +0000 UTC]

And we never even got to see the Golden Mask of Skull Spiders! Hrmph. That definitely could have tied in with Makuta's Mask of Control. Yeah, you're right, LoSS went down way too quick.

Ah, you're right. I'm enjoying picturing wise old Onua being best friends with fun-loving Pohatu.

Well, Cryoshell are back after a two-year hiatus of sorts, and they've uploaded a new video on YouTube. And it's something I've been waiting for since the Phantoka back in 2008: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F0nzv…
Also, apparently the new writer for the 2015 books is someone named Ryder Windham; he was the writer for quite a lot of Star Wars material, like comics, reference books and novels, as well as junior novels for Indiana Jones, so I think things are in safe hands when it comes to the story.

Cryokina In reply to LukeMCFC141 [2015-02-28 13:11:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm quite pleased by this news. The instrumental is nice, and I'm surprised to find that I own a few of Windham's Star Wars reference books. I found them rather enjoyable, and I hope that Lego consider having him produce a Bionicle World-style background book. The sheer depth in his Essential Guide to the Force is something I've always wanted for Bionicle.

LukeMCFC141 In reply to Cryokina [2015-02-28 20:34:17 +0000 UTC]

I've finally got my hands on one of the new sets; sadly, they only had the Protectors, and no Jungle, so I went with Ice. The build's actually slightly more complex than the Piraka/Inika build in some ways, and the fact it's on a smaller set is amazing. I love the original build style more, honestly, but the CCBS is pretty great, I have to agree.
Oh, and Christian Faber, who was one of the artists behind both Bionicle and Hero Factory, finally revealed what his 'Rebel Nature' project was; I thought it'd be a comic or a TV series, but it's actually going to be a full-blown feature film, so that should be pretty exciting. And, apparently, judging by the comments on the Gravity Hurts video, Cryoshell may be involved. Speaking of which, Gravity Hurts has got to be my favourite Bionicle song.
I kinda hope they do something like the Bionicle encyclopaedia again; I've got two copies of the 2007 edition. Sadly, it's pretty much the only Bionicle book I've ever had, which I need to fix, honestly, and fast.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cryokina In reply to LukeMCFC141 [2015-03-01 17:40:20 +0000 UTC]

I've acquired the majority of the new sets due to a combination of luck and monetary windfalls. I'm quite pleased with them. Gali is still my favourite Toa design, although Kopaka is a close second. With Tahu, I found that switching out the torso armours he uses for the version used in the Iron Man Ultrabuild set (www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.… ) greatly improves his look. It's a pity they haven't used those shells since 2012; I'd love to see them again, (or some similar shells), since their more detailed look is a perfect bridge between the aesthetics of Hero Factory and Bionicle.

On the PoI, I dislike his lack of elbows, but the parts collection I built up makes that an easy fix. It's nice that he has different and interesting tools; the PoE has a cool drill, but the knife in his other hand is underwhelming.
