Oh well thank you. I've just gotten back into painting after a 15 year absence so your praise is encouraging! lol

Thank you! They're tedious and take a lot of time but they're worth it in the end. I'm attempting to be able to draw both animals and people.

A worthy goal, I find for myself that I have more of an affinity for drawing animals, whereas people don't hold the same interest. It just doesn't come natural to me, so I tend to avoid it. lol Hmm I shouldn't be so limiting.

I just recently got into doing people. My affinity is actually leaned way more towards animals, but as an individual once pointed out to me: "Eh, your animals are mediocre and not the greatest, but your portraits are AMAZING!" Ha, what a lovely comment.
I kind of anticipated my skill in both subjects to be the other way around, or better yet, equal.

Yeah I find that with my landscapes, they're passable but definitely not something I would say are my best works. lol

Oh well thank you!
I lived in Victoria back in the day... I'm curious, do they still have artists all along the wharf peddling their wares? It was such a great atmosphere.

Oh yeah they do, it's almost about the tourist season when the boardwalk will be bustling with artists and people... we're just waiting for the nice weather and the cruise ships.

Yeah we have something similar in Kelowna where artists get together in City park during the summer and offer their art to tourists, so I may just do that in July. Problem is, when you've just come back from a long absence, it's tough to get a bunch of pieces together to sell to people. Commissions are my bread and butter, so that's my focus right now.

You've got to go with what works best for you. I find that on the promenade you're in competition with any artist that does similar work to one's own. Like when there are maybe two or three artists who all do tourist portraits as well as celebrity portraits along the wharf. Because it's hard to say whether the work of one artist is better than another (sometimes it's obvious) but otherwise it's like you have to do something extra and unique to stand out.
What do you usually get commissioned to paint?

Art is so subjective in that respect. What appeals to one person doesn't to another. Take minimalistic art for instance, you can be in a gallery and see beautiful and serene pieces from one artist, and then basic monotone colours from another and go how is that art? They want HOW much for that??? Errrrr so frustrating.
Ok I'm ranting...
My commissions are typically wildlife art for special occasions, although I'm working on a piece in the near future for a fantasy book cover that I'm excited about. I'm pretty versatile although portraits are probably a weakness, I haven't painted a human in a long long time. lol

Too true and you are right when the art is quite different but I mean like when two artists are trying to sell the same type of art and the styles are quite similiar. But lol back to minimalistic art... I feel the same way sometimes... I went to an art gallery showing recently and someone was selling these very simple plain stick figure drawings (like something a 5 yr-old would do) about 10x10 cms each and asking $90 for them. Kinda like a slap to the face of other artists who pour over their pieces with detail and effort.
Lol all I draw is people. But my parents would love it if I did the type of art you do, they kind of tried to steer me in that direction, but I've just never been very good at it.
The fantasy book cover sounds exciting... any well-known writer I might have heard of?

Yep, I agree, it's a slap in the face, especially when so many great artists go unnoticed.
Funny, my parent's wanted me to get into a trade and never found art to be worthwhile. Thankfully my Grandmother fostered my ability and I later went on to University and a career (totally unrelated to art) but I came back to it last year and am happy. You should do what you love, money is not always the be all and end all but it sure helps with survival. lol
As for the book cover, no he's an emerging young adult fantasy writer so it will be his first of what I hope will be many novels.

Hey your latest deviation submission to our group has been put into the wrong category. If you withdraw it and resubmit to the right folder it won't count against your 2 submissions a week limit. If we have to decline it it will count against your submission limit. We would therefore be grateful if you could withdraw it and resubmit to the traditional art category. Thanks
Nice gallery by the way
