Actually, Isreal has a very interesting place in the history of moluscs, and their study! The story goes, two researchers studying the desert and wondering where all the nitrogen was coming from (ie manure) led to one jokingly picking up a rock and saying "see, here is the answer!", the other being all seriouse took a seriouse look at the rock, and beheld the sands moved!! That day they discovered three new species of snail, each the size of grains of sand, and these little critters are responcable for 15% of all the anually deposited manure in the desert each year!!!
