A quick rundown of the site.
Most of the socializing aspects of DA is under the MORE tab, here you can find groups to join, discuss topics on the forum, do critiques, etc.

You can also give out llamas. People give llamas out to people for many different reasons. Maybe they like your page, your art, or are just being friendly. Some people just collect llamas because... reasons. The drop down menu is in the upper right corner of the persons profile page.

There are other badges. They are typically earned by participating in one of DA's special events. Those will typically show up as a Notice in your inbox.

You can also watch your favorite artist/friends with the icon in the upper right corner of their profile or send them a personal note.

But in a nutshell, that is DA. The rest is best understood by messing around the site.
